Never underestimate the importance of a rollcage... A Rallysprint I went to a few months ago an Evo4 went sideways into a tree at speed and the impact into the cage was much worse than that (luckily the impact was just behind the co-driver). Scared the bejeezus out of me 8O

Good side intrusion protection FTW, regardless of whether it is race or rally. Never get into the whole I'll leave these bars out because it will add weight" thing, it is your life you're playing with.
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976

more importantly in Anderson's case, was the strength of the seatmounts. i watched some dodgy sports show tonight and they were refering to the strength of a fine NZ made seat causing the tunnel to move. whilst Racetech are a brilliant brand of seat, i don't believe the seat did all the strengthening of the floor section below it?

Heh heh, you're so right there.

You weld the outside attachment points of your seat mounting bars to the sill reinforcement bar, which is in turn attached to the door intrusion bars. You then only have a comparatively small reinforcement on the inner bar mounting point (on the trans tunnel). So, if you take a king hit in the door, such that it pushes all the door reinforcement in ... attached to your sill bar naturally. So, the sill bar pushes into the trans tunnel with the seat mounting bars. The seat moves away from the Holden that's just hit it, with the sacrificial member being the transmission tunnel.

Basically, seat attaches to door intrusion, so if door intrusion gets el fuxxinated and pushed in, the whole seat goes with it, away from the car that is trying to climb in the driver door and kill the driver.

Did that make sense?

excuse my ignorance, but is that sort of damage repairable, or is it a trip to the nearest holden dealer for a new chassis?

that is a dead car

have a good look in the rear door.... see the rea bulkhead all crushed up?
the floor pan of the car is all bent.
by the time you cut away all the bent /stretched stuff youd be left with the passenger mirror only.
except that was busted when he went l/h side into the barrier....

Yep.
Makes me think that the MR2 is the wrong car to get t-boned in and get something pushing sidways into the "transmission tunnel" aka fuel tank.
Can we all say burn baby burn. :(

Ask DaveBro and my brother about the merits of proper rollcages after they hit a tyrewall at Manfeild at/around 180 kph 8O :?

Fortunately, due to spending decent coin on a good cage you can ask them.
