I'd say don't bother going to the post shop to get the details, just go straight to the police.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Read your policy, most of them have an uninsured motorist extension. If you can prove who was driving the other car (through the police or witness etc) then you will have cover up to a set level with no excess and won't affect your no claims discount. My policies through State are covered up to $3,000. So it won't matter if the other guy had no insurance, no money or was drunk you could still get some cover. Let the police know this, tell them you are responsible enough to have 3rd party but need their help to identify the driver so your car can be fixed.

I say compulsary insurance ftw. They do it in the states, I'm pretty sure they do it in Oz? If you can't afford insurance, then you can't afford to own a car.

all tho i dont have insurance yet, i would agree with this,
if it was compulsary, it would be cheaper.

would save alot of time and stress

Yea, I think insurance is covered in your registration over in Aus, which is why rego costs a lot more over there than over here

Yeah, I think it's like $1000 for 6 months rego?

Cause it covers insurance.

What I was told by the guy at work anyway, who moved there last week

So 3rd party private insurance doesnt exist in aussie? (because 3rd party is covered under registration)

But they still have optional full cover?

Compulsory insurance is good as long as it is regulated. Otherwise you can get into a situation where companies continually raise their prices because people are always going to have to pay.

I’m not sure if it would be applicable in the situation described anyway. If the person was pulling a handbrake and the insurance company can prove it, I thought they wouldn’t cover him (same as if they were drunk or driving an unwarranted car)

IIRC

Compulsory insurance in Australia only covers medical bills, so if you injury someone in a crash your insurance will cover their treatment. The compulsory plan required doesn't include vechile damage. Obviously you can purchase vechile damage seperatly.

This is what I can remember from when I lived there about 10 years ago.

I can only assume this is because they dont have any free public health service.
