Make sure your car is up to WOF spec/is WOF'd and reg'd, I hear they fail you on stuff like bulbs being out these days.

15 years? Old bugger!

From what I remember from 11 years ago... constantly check your mirrors, make it obvious you are doing so. Keep an eye on what hazards you see as they may as what hazards you saw. I can't remember much more than that. Things may have changed too.

re read the road code
indicate, new give way rules, check your following distance (2 second rule) and make sure you know what the speed limit is (and keep within it)

When i did my test a number of years ago, it was all about pointing out hazards etc. Instructor would tell you to drive down a road go around a corner then pull over and name as many hazards as you could remember.
Did that like 5 or 6 times then had to do a parallel park.

If you go AT ALL above the limit you fail instantly pretty much and for gods sake, DONT go through an orange light. they failed me for that .

Also top up your wiper fluid etc, they may ask you to check your wipers are working etc etc. you never know

Also if your car is boy racerish then when they get in say something like "im sorry about this car but I dont have my own and so I borrowed my brothers, I apolagise about the loud exhaust etc""

Dont let them judge you for the car you have, because they will try

Apparently its changed since you just show up at the police station after 18 months give them money and walk away with a paper licence... I'm sure I've still got that one floating around somewhere.

i got caught out on cutting corners too sharp

apparently the shortest distance between 2 points isnt in a straight apex clipping line when making right turns lolol

checking your mirrors (all three) every 7 seconds was the one rule i was told ... not sure how much of a myth it was but i got my licence first time anyway

also be very careful about speed if you go over they will fail you, also make sure you slow down before a 70 sign (if going 100 for example)

Make it VERY obvious you are checking your mirrors, but not so obvious that you are steering sideways. When you get to a stop sign, stop. And dont use that word loosely! My partner failed because according to the guy she was going 1kmh. She was adamant she had stopped.

Also I beleive they record the tests now. Thats probably a good thing as if they fail you but you think you didnt, I suppose you can challenge it?

I did 140km on my full test because some wa*kers wouldnt let me move into the slow lane and I had a cop trying to pass me :s had the testing guy tell me to just go for it haha

When it comes to the "identifying hazards" bit, make sure you mention something you can see in the rear view mirror i.e a car behind etc. Even though it's a crock, 'cos as far as I'm concerned if it's behind you it's not a hazard! They think it is...

I havent been for my full, no, but I just recently did the restricted test after they made it harder.

I had been driving for nearly 3 years before I sat my restricted as I left home at 16 and had no parents to tell me off for it, only the police occasionally lol.

Anyway, it was a huge shock when I failed on the new restricted. Ended up getting a few driving lessons and realised they look for things most people dont EVER do in usual driving conditions.

One trick is to angle your rear view mirror up slightly. So you need to make more of an effort to look into it, rather then just twitching your eyes toward it. This way they can see your body movement as you check your mirrors.

Check all your side streets as you drive pass them.

check your rear view mirror before you brake, every time.

make sure your car is tidy and smells good.

Keep your hands at 10 and 2 on the wheel, and dont rest your left hand on the gearstick comfortably, only touch it when your using it.

Stick your parents pink floyd, pearl jam, or led zepelin album in the tray under your headunit so he doesnt think your a hooligan.

make sure you listen carefully to the testers instructions, and make it clear if you didnt hear what he said. Mine would mumble a lot and get angry if I didnt hear what he said so I had to calmly explain I couldnt quite hear him when I missed a turn etc.

I sat my motorbike full test yesterday. only one point off for forgetting to indicate when doing my u turn

I did do a defensive driving course recently, and did the practical part of that in a car because my bike was out of action at the time. but the instructor during the course had a few pointers for the car people.

Mirrors.
blind spot checks over shoulder when changing lanes, turning over a cycle lane etc. (look once look twice, look bike!)
speed remember to slow down before the change in limit
slow down for a railway and look both ways
don't cut over the white lines when turning right.
turn into the correct lane when turning into a multilaned road.

That's about all I can remember

1) Be confident - the testing officer I had told me they generally know who they're going to fail before the leave the car park.

2) Talk, be friendly with the the testing officer.

3) Stick to the road code and be prepared to identify hazards, make emergency stops etc, check mirrors regularly, look around at intersections & two hands on the wheel.
