86 gathering CANCELLED - NOW 1ST JUNE TAUPO SEE NEXT POST

Postby nzer » Wed Apr 10, 2013 1:56 pm

Our next 86/BRZ national get together is scheduled for Sunday 2nd June 2013 - the Sunday of Queen's Birthday weekend at Hampton Downs.

Following the success of the Taupo festival of fun, Playday have secured the Sunday of Queens Birthday Weekend at Hampton Downs for a track day. This is NOT a Toyota only day so BRZs and any other makes/models welcome! Be great to have the Altezza and MR2 people there. We will however have an 86 group on the track.

It's free to attend but is $135 if you want to take your car on the track.

Hamptons track hire is a bit more expensive than Taupo for the playday team so the cost will be $135. To secure your spot please pay by direct credit to PLAYDAY, 03 0698 0485598 00 giving your name as the reference. Remember, their last track day sold out so book early.

Please drop Playday a quick email once you have made the payment just to ensure they have matched the payment correctly playday@playdayontrack.co.nz and can keep a track of how many 86s they have registered. Remember to tell them your have an 86 or BRZ.

Accommodation is available at the Hampton Downs apartments. The apartments are priced as follows 1 person $150 per night, 2 persons $185 per night and for more than 2 an additional $30 per person. All the apartments have two bedrooms which can be configured with either a king bed or 2 x singles and some are available with a sofa bed in the lounge http://www.hamptondowns.com/pages/37/ha ... tments.htm

We will likely have a club dinner/drinks on the Saturday night for those that are going to stay the night before and we'll also likely have something informal on the Sunday after the track day with drinks/food somewhere.

The Sunday is the official club day but if you want to make a weekend of it Playday also have the Taupo track booked on the Saturday. All day 9am to 4pm $130 or afternoon only 1pm to 4pm $70. Book as per the instructions above.

Following on from the success of Taupo it will be great to see you all there.

86/BRZ owners remember to join the owners club on www.86brz.co.nz

Come along to meet everyone (free) or take advantage of the rare opportunity to drive on the FULL Taupo track.

So as well as a Supra sized thing being developed in conjunction with BMW there is a 4wd 86 in development. It'll be a hybrid with electric front drive hub motors it seems

I heard from a friend who attended, that the Taupo day on the 1st had a HUGE field, circa 100 cars, and that an MR2 burned for close to half an hour before it was put out??

If that is true, it reaffirms to me why I think that P.O.T need to make extinguishers mandatory in all vehicles being entered, and to initiate some kind of basic scrutineering to check for poorly presented vehicles.

If everybody who was on track had an extinguisher, they could have helped to put it out, instead of standing and watching as someones pride and joy slowly melted in front of their face :(

Fire extinguishers didn't help. Five were unloaded (the big ones) into her but the boot was melted shut pretty quickly.

This chap was at the festival of fun etc so his car was used to track and definitely didn't seem to be in poor condition at all. Sometimes sh*t just happens.

Many assisted with their own extinguishers. Did prevent the tank blowing though - it was blistered badly.

I do agree though that they should be mandatory as even a 1kg may delay the bad stuff long enough for more help to arrive.

Took the fire brigade to arrive to put it out.

So sad to see that image :(

Yes, you are right, shit happens, and can to the best prepared cars, but thats why scrutineering shuold be mandatory for all. Just because someone uses their car as a 'racecar' often doesnt mean its less likely to have problems, infact its probably the opposite, as the further a vehicle is taken away from stock standard, the more likelihood there is of problems occuring.

We all know that when you arrive at a track day, you are normally so focussed on swapping wheels and getting out there, that the basics can be forgotten about, so anyone running a track day should have people walking the pits giving each car 1 minute of attention... to simpy check each car has an extinguisher, the battery is secure, that engine bay components are solidly mounted and not held together wtih cable ties as is so often the case, look for any oil/fuel lines that look tired and check for solid brake pedal.

Its not rocket science, doesnt take much manpower to do, and I feel anyone running a track day owes it to everyone who has spent alot of money to attend, that they should get as much track time as possible, something basic scrutinnering would help to achieve.

Anyways...back on topic.

+1 for scrutineering and not morons either people who actually no what there looking for non of this she'll be right mate BS.

There's no way that MR2 looks like any sought of race car to me it just looks like a normal street car.

Been going to track-days for over a decade and that probably numbers in the 60 + and at non of the days that I've been to have I ever seen that much fire damage.

I also heard there was upto 100 cars at this day I gotta think the organisers saw $$$$$ signs in there eyes.100 cars = not that much track time and alot of cars on the track at once.

Because it doesn't have a picnic table for a wing and mad hellaflush or sponsorship stickers all over it?
Without seeing whats under the car/in the engine bay theres no way to judge what level of prep it has had. Maybe the owner skipped the stickers and bling and went for stuff that actually improved the performance of the car?

Stripped interior , lowered (could be anything from cut springs to $10K of Penske suspension) and what might be the remains of a raceseat is what I see. Wheels look like they could be a decent lightweight wheel, and who knows what sort of tyres are on them.

And who said racecar? its a trackday, not a race meeting.
Maybe it is just a standard car with the interior stripped, either way it sucks for the owner.

I'm all for basic scrutineering at trackdays, at least a quick check for leaks and play in suspension, plus the items already mentioned. Not so much for the protection of whoever brought the dodgy car (but that is a bonus for them), but for the protection of those around them. If you turn up in a dodgy car and crash/burn it out thats your own problem for not getting it inspected/fixed before bringing it to a track, but I'd be well pissed if somebody else's dodgy suspension, or perished oil lines sent me into a wall or cost me a few sessions on track while we waited for their car to burn itself out.

has had a lot of goodies in it, kind of irrelevant to what caused the fire though

In cases like this, Im always very interested to know what the cause of the fire was, as the info can then help others try to avoid the same fate.

1kg extinguishers in vehicles are only really to allow the driver to exit the car, any sort of oil or fuel fire and there is little chance of stopping it without several of the big extinguishers the marshalls have (even then it's not guaranteed).

IMO every car which is going on track should have a 1kg extinguisher (and every driver 100% cotton overalls) as per msnz Schedule A rules, because burns are nasty.

Sucks to see the car like that though.

When you fill out and sign the entry form for P.O.T., you are agreeing that your car is up to the required standard. It's the same when you turn up to a race meeting. Scrutineers no longer - and haven't done for years - check things like the brake pedal, bearings etc. You are responsible for that as the driver/entrant otherwise the finger could be pointed at an individual if something broke that was checked.

It is thought that the cause of the fire was a broken turbo oil line but that can't be confirmed due to the damage. The car had some sort of plastic type engine cover which melted and therefore couldn't be opened to get to the seat of the fire. Even attacking it from underneath didn't work.

It would almost be worth taking a sketchy as hell car to a P.O.T event... cracked brake lines.. a bald tyre or two... an oil leak for good measure plus anything else you just wouldnt to be around a car with. Do the "self scrutineering" and park it up as you're sent out onto the track and ask everyone if they are OK with the current process.

I went to one at Manfield and the guys running it were very good, I was just expecting scrutineering and was a bit shocked that all I had to do was tick boxes and sign a piece of paper. It took away the confidence that the vehicles around me were up to a level of quality/preparedness... one guy there was at his first track day, hadnt touched his brake fluid was on standard pads and stretched road tyres... nervous...

You could try that. But bet you anything you'd be banned for life from any track or motorposrt event in the country, plus be done for knowingly signing an incorrect document.

So there is no independant checking of the basic mechanical worthiness of cars going on track at MSNZ events anymore? So Joe Redneck thinks she'll be right and signs his entry form and puts everybody else on track at risk and this is better than having somebody check the car because they might miss something and be sued? Wouldn't it open the organisers up for legal action for having no safety check at all?

240kph down the back straight of Puke and not knowing when the car next to you last had its basic steering system checked.. Fark that for a joke.. just look at some of the pics that have surfaced on here of "mods" some people have done.

The scary thing is that you'd be much more likely let onto the track with the unfit car. Thats the point im making
