Act like a legit buyer, and show up to his place with your plates on your car then hit up trademe and let them know hes selling fraudulent plates.

Yeah i'd probably win the plates if I was you. Make sure you get onto plates on tuesday, then when you win them, ask for owner details etc and say you're not going through with trade as you phoned plates and they are registered to a different person etc.

Otherwise you will have someone else buy them and lose money as well.

Well luckily the auction closes on wednesday, so after ive confirmed everything with plates ill get the auction removed before its finished.

Heres the deal as far as i know.

Ownership of plates means nothing with some sort of writing to say that you have been transfered ownership. So unless there is something in writing, just because you buy a car with personalised plates, you dont own it. The hard part comes if the orginal registered owner has written and signed multiple letters. But this does seem the case. If you have somethign in writing then you own the plates. hit them up.

This is as far as i have been told over the years of 400k worth of personalised plates purchases, things may have changed since as they usually do though

I thought this was the case. I have got my copies of ownership forms i got from Scott, but then this guy bought them originally. So im not sure if he sold the plates, the new owner got them remade and hes selling the originals, or if he didnt actually sell them..

Around 1500 actually, bought through me but as pert of deals for others or I bought and then onsold. When i started we would get them for around 250

Yup and if these have been remanufactored ask them why that was allowed without the original owners permission.

I've never bought a p plate before and this is only adding to the reasons why not to!

Yup upper management decision to advertise and market it such that you can command such a high price. Thats the reason why they got rid of most of the group buys etc. Its a brand move i guess but it just sucks that there is no alternative which is why i think people have raised issues about this with the commerce commision. I think the most ridiculous was the 399 cost to make your existing plate an euro plate !!! Which lead to many getting it made overseas and hence this issue coming up because they now have police on their side to spot fake euro plates even though they do conform to nz standards.

The only reason they command the high price they do is monopoly.

Just stop buying new plates and they will go under, simple. How can they exist if people stop buying try hard plates for stupid prices?

Just an update. Called Licensys this morning and they confirmed i am the legal owner of this plate. Have emailed trademe telling the seller is not legally allowed to sell it. Cannot put passwords on plates anymore, but they will now call me if anyone tries to change ownership. Will put the plate on my car tho, as they are unable to do anything if its on a car.

Hell yeah, i owe you one. Now im just waiting for them to remove the auction. So glad its sorted now tho, started to think i didnt actually own it!

I have a mate who works in the scrap industry and also know of someone who worked at the smelter for aluminium. Acess to old plates are very easy when working in these areas.

Yeh mines flagged by both Licensys and the Police, so I get a letter whenever I dereg/reg it to a car, or if anyone does for that matter!

The police are pretty quick sharp about it.

The trademe guy is the victim here though, they paid for something that wasn't the sellers to be sold, so will now be left with nothing. Pays to do a back ground check if buying a plate just like a car I guess!
