Shit, that's a big one. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery!!
Having never been to that track before, does anyone know why the rescue crew couldn't get the driver out? Don't they have cutting gear?

I only ask so we can learn from it, 'cos I'm on the Fire Rescue crew for Motorsport Auckland, and we always have cutting gear in one of the cars if it's needed.

looking at the impact point of the Holden, the front section of the intrusion and front leg of cage have gone inboard and trapped his legs. bear in mind, it's a FWD 4 cylinder shell with a RWD recessed 6 cylinder, so the footwell will be rather narrow.
watching fire/rescue crews cut the roof off a road car is easy compared to chopping a rollcage to enable extraction.

From the photos it looks like a fantastic effort from the track crew. There very quickly and working methodically to get him out of the car while the rear end of the car is in flames. I hope when it happens to me that there is a crew with that skill closeby.

Although more than likely I'll be a marshmellow in the middle of a forest somewhere.

chances are though, if it happens in a forest, whilst rescue time is longer, you will more than likely only have yourself to blame!!

True, but that's not much consolation when you're on fire. :?

That's a good point re the footwell. I wasn't criticising the rescue crew at all, putting a fire that size out in 2 minutes is a pretty damn good effort!
Thankfully, I haven't had occasion to use our cutting gear yet, but I imagine, as you said, it's be bloody hard to cut a cage.
