this happened about 20 mins ago at the end of my road





apparently a white and grey 96 shape subaru pulled out infront of the mitsi that was infront of the truck. mitsi slammed on brakes and truck did too. ths is the end result

Guess if that had some metal/dirt in the back it might not have been so bad cos the load in the trailer would have made the tyres have more contact with the road surface

Ive seen a rubbish truck ( must have been empty) try to stop suddenly and its wheels did the whole bouncy thing.

Would have been from the trailer. Could have been from the truck but i doubt it. the trailer is relatively lighter... When you see this happen it is pretty freaky. Looks kinda like hydro's from a ute from the auto salon

The turning from the trailer wouldnt have over turned the truck as they are designed to swivel.

I would say the pulses are from the truck, when you look right in front of the people standing there, you can see what looks like the trailor tyres marks (rear axles) where it has gone over the barrier. The pulsing marks carry on up to the truck.

I think you will find that there are very few trailors out there with ABS, the only ones we come across are on fuel tankers. Many trucks have them now, but not trailors.

I reckon the pulses are from the front axles of the trailer although the they could be from the truck.

With the trailer 'drifting' to the left would cause the front axles to go to the left too which might be why the pulses are to the left also.

I'm not saying that the trailer had ABS. All i'm saying is that when trailers lock up they bounce around like crazy in a quick stopping situation.

Would be interesting to see a full police investigation ans to see that exactly went on (according to the police).

What the heck are you on?
In simple terms:
The trailer has abs sensors just like your car does (cog on the back of the hub). Sends a signal back to the trucks ECU which then controls the trailer abs system.

trailers are coming out now with ebs & abs to match the trucks that have the saem
american trucks usually have to be retrofitted with it coz they;re miles behind, as always.

trucks and trailers stop/handle better with a load on, the wheels often wont lock when loaded = good. NZHVBC actually turns down the brakes efficiency on most trucks to make every trailer /truck combo interchangable. the lack of shock absorbers on rear of trucks most of the time, and on trailers, plus a lack of any load meant it would have just bounced.... 3000kg rated springs (each, and that particular trailer would have 8 of them) are fairly solid, esp on a 5500kg tare weight trailer.... not that shocks really make any difference to them, except a tad more maintenance...

disc brakes on trailers are often high maintenance and offer little advantage over drums, esp in NZ where we run so many axles (same weight in the us or europe only runs 2 axles on a trailer where we run 4-6

it doesnt need to be retrofitted to american trucks, we just imported a w900l KW last year, it had factory abs.

altho ours is drum you can get full disk brakes on kenworths if you want, afaik the option isnt published in the spec list, but i know of trucks that have been delivered like that

its not the manufacturers dragging the chain, its the new zealand agents for them..

just out of interest, are you a diesel mechanic or something like that, you seem to know a fair bit about it.
