Random dragster stuff

Postby Lloyd » Wed Mar 29, 2006 10:22 pm

Just flicking throguh random stuff on the net (as you do) and came across a rocket powered dragster named Vanishing Point from 1984.

0-60mph in 0.2 sec
0-100mph in 0.5 sec
1/4 mile figures of 3.58 @ 386mph

Website has (had) a vid but sadly its now a 404. Anyone got a copy of it?
Just having a hunt for a bit more info on it.

I'm sorry but I find it rather hard to believe that, that car can cut a quarter in less than 4 seconds and reach 60mph in 0.2s.

That would mean that it's like 10x faster than the Veyron...

Oh, in the name of god, that automobile would be very nice to be in posession of. Let's disreguard the females, instead I would like to be in posession of said vehicle. Please try to imagine the G Force this vehicle exerts onto you.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

yes it would.

I dont know whether its accurate or not,

but rocket engines can be powerful enough to do that (hell the infernal combustion engine can do low 5 second quarters)

and rocket powered cars dont need to worry about traction when launching... as such.

Psssh seams you know NOTHING about jet engines. Batmans old skool (1960's) car was jet powered and it did skids

internal combustion engine can actually manage high 4 sec 1/4 miles, with approx. 8000hp

no reason why a big arse jet engine couldn't get you there faster, but 20 years ago a 3.58 would've been unheard of. I wonder if that was a flying 1/4, rather than standing?

Technically speaking you could make turbine powered car to skid...
Helicopter turbine through gearbox will make it possible.

ah ha! I failed to make the distiction between the two. Yes I imagine anything that can propel many tonnes of space shuttle off the planet could do crazy things in a little drag car!

If you are interested in fast rocket cars then do a search for Kitty O'Neil and Ky Michaelson.

A car that he built and she 'piloted' in 1977 did a 3.22 at 396mph. Same car did a 412mph run aswell.

You guys know how easy it is to make a peroxide rocket?

A guy I work with has made a few... not for the faint hearted though

The simplest rocket is the monopropellant rocket. It works in the following way:

* The liquid hydrogen peroxide is fed with high pressure from a tank to a chamber filled with a decomposition catalyst.
* The decomposition catalyst causes the hydrogen peroxide to decompose into water steam and oxygen. Heat is released by the reaction. The temperature of the formed gas mixture is about 650 oC.
* After passing through the catalyst chamber the hot, high pressure gas mixture is released through a rocket nozzle.
* The velocity of the gas flow after the nozzle becomes well over 1000 m/s and gives the rocket a considerable reaction force thrust.

Replace the word "catalyst" with silver mesh and Bob's your aunty.

You can ever squirt some more fuel in at the end of the nozzle for AFTERBURNER POWER  .

Please don't try it at home with a baked bean tin/silvermesh/peroxide - Could get messy.
