Postby ALLTREC_TURB » Tue Mar 20, 2007 9:54 pm

This is just an idea ive been tossing round, i was wondering since im a sheetmetal worker by trade, what in interest would be in, alminium battery boxes and stuff like that, if anyone would be keen or has any other ideas about what i could make that would be of use to people let me know.

Im thinking of having an Ali air filter box made up. Rectangular in shape to fit a common K & N filter, with a inlet half way along one side on top, on an angle, and the outlet smack bang in the middle of the bottom.

How hard would that be to make, and seal properly?

At a guess, approx 250mm long, by 180 wide, and 180 high?

the inlet and outlet holes would be the problem, all the edges and joins can be lock formed, requires special machinery (ill draw a diagram over the next couple of days, that combined with a small bead of silcone and it would seal perfectly, im kind of playing with the same idea at the moment

The inlet/outlet pipes are the easy bit for me, I can just get the hole cut and part of a pipe weleded on, thats all I was planning. Getting the box made up, to house, and fit an air filter was that hard part, making the lid to fit etc

Yeah your right tigging is the other option, but I'mm pretty sure it would be rather difficult we;ding 0.7/0.9 thickness Ali without distorting it or melting holes as its so thin, lockforming would also provide extra ridgidity (spl?) to make up for the thinner materials

Im guessing the lid would need to be detachable? or once the filter etc is in would it not need to come apart again

Yeah it does still give a neat finish still and also it takes alot less time using lockformed joins as opposed to tigging every join, will take some photos to show all those that don't know, what it looke like exactly, I'll see what i can come up with anyways, Elmo what do you mean by...

Havig the inlet half along one side on, on an angle, cant really picture what you mean exactly

I dont think battery boxes would be overly cost effective as those black plastic ones are so cheap, but with labour and materials would probably be looking at between 50-70 bucvks

Seen as Elmo has given me some measurements I'll see what i can knock up from thats, and if it works out, ill put some piucs up and see what you guys think and whether or not there would be more people interested, sound good.

If I wind up getting Brads KE70, I'll also be looking at fabricating a new dash for it out of aluminium and see how that turns out

I also have some pictures of what lockforming looks like for those of you who don't know, also thinking that i can probably do heatshielfs and maybe ever fan shrouds out of either Aluminium or Several different finishes of stainless steel

that would have been his one he had years ago now.....has a pic of it in the smoko room with a "little" bit of white smoke coming from the rear tyres.

my KE25 spent almost a year sitting around in his workshop, head rebuild then latter bottom end & g/box.

He isnt lending you tools out of a blue tool chest is he ? cause thats mine

lol.

lockforming.

Brings back memories of my time as a sheetmetal worker.

Lockforming is poose though and i wouldnt like to see any of that crap in my car. Its essentially reserved for the heater ducting at your local warehouse stationary.

Use a thicker gauge of material and tig it 8)

I personally would like to see pod filters GTFO and would like to someday make myself a free flowing filter/cold air box to fit the standard air filter ( or a larger filter maybe).

I think that'd be choice.
