80's toyotas vs 90's toyotas RUST

Postby Caveman » Sun Sep 02, 2007 7:07 pm

Hey everyone

I have owned quite a few pre 89 toyotas and post 89 toyotas. The pre 89 rust like a biarch (all of them, even the mint ones) and the post 89 seem to be able to be left with dents, chips and scratchs with only a tiny layer of surface rust after years.

Is there a difference in primer? Difference in steel? Difference in preperation?

Design?

As far as paint/primer goes, i've found the layer on my Trueno to be *pathetically* thin, slight scratch or knock and i'm seeing metal.

hmm maybe design however I owned a 90' ae92 levin which had absolutely no rust, had it striped down at nothing when doing race prep and was amazed at how mint the shell was. The exterior was pretty beat up as well with heaps of dents and paint missing.

I know other people with earlier ae92s with really bad rust problems :?

Mines mainly in the roof, i've gotten it just intime to save everywhere else. Once I find a good sealing type paint for the boot.

To be fair though, what 80's Jappas didn't have rust problems? Alot of hondas (particularly the older 'tegs, preludes etc) are terrible for it, fair sure alot of others are too.

Fish oil mate. They started dunking their stuff in fish oil.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

I don't think the year has anything to do with it. I've seen a 2003 Hiace van with a big rust hole under the rear windscreen which had to be repaired. It was NZ-new too. Toyotas and Hondas just seem to be shocking for rust, the engines are great and last forever, just wish they put the same amount of thought into the body and corrosion protection. My 1980 Mitsubishi has very little rust, compare that to my 1982 Corolla which had rust everywhere - lower sills, below rear windows, lower guards, bottom of doors, rear quarter panels, wheel arches - just about everywhere! Luckily it's all more or less repaired now but I probably wouldn't own another Toyota again unless it is 100% rust free.

Where the car is stored and the quality of any repairs also play a big part. Our old Escort was garaged its whole life and didn't have any rust at all, yet most Fords of that vintage have rusted in peace.

Or the Sentra, which is left outside 99.9% of the time and is severely neglected. It has two spots of rust, both in areas where panelbeaters have repaired the car, the rest of the car is rust-free.

And fish oil is great stuff for rust-proofing - I have a jar of fisholine and it stops rust in its tracks.
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976

or does it just prevent

i believe i read on here a while back that toyota changed the primer they used?

fish oil is a protective coating, so it prevents rust as it stops air/moisture getting to the bare metal causing the rust reaction.

My 86 isn't too bad compared to most, but I don't have a garage to keep it in, and the amount of rust has spread so quickly it all most makes you cry :(

So, whats the best thing to do? Just get it resprayed or any little tricks? I don't want it to die to the cancer.

where is the rust, how bad is the rust? ie, are we talking about actual rust holes and actual corrosion of the metal, or just little specs of surface rust.

You need to neutralise the rust reaction, using a rust killer or rust convertor - that will stop the current rust reaction dead in its tracks, then apply a means of rust protection/preventative such as fish oil if its out of sight (ie inside the doors/guards/hatch etc) or prime/paint over it if it's on the outside.

Fish oil yes sir!

The reason I ask is ive already cut out a large chunk of the boot and replaced it with new metal, painted it and coated it in fish oil (water pools there)

There is a lot more rust in the car and im thinking of striping it back 100% and using a zinc rich primer or similar. Just seeing if toyota changed primer types or different steel preps. Dont want to dip if unnessacary but might do depending on cost.

yea new cars that have rust are obviously been effected by sea travel.

my 88 gtz had chronic rust

IT IS NOT FISH OIL!!!!
There is difference between metal composition.
My ST165 rusts like lada on salty roads, while my AE101 does not.
As usual ST165 had rusted floors (right trough) so I used piece of spare guard of AE101 to fix it (we gas welded the holes so any "fish oil" on AE101 metal surface, would be cooked off), I was lazy (CBF condition) so I did not painted the welded place (naked steel) straight away and was driving in rain like this for a few days. Basically it took 1 overnight for ST165 steel to rust, while AE101 remain shiny for weeks (that is right I wire brushed the metal surfaces so there was no chance for fish oil to remain, not that manufacturers use fish oil - paint does not stick to it anyway). It also rules out galvanisation (it would be bitch to weld with gas welder). So my conclusion is that "new" steel contains more chromium (or other metal that creates non porous oxide layer on surface of the steel).

Also it is not sea travel that affects new cars, it is the salt on japanese roads, that they put in snowy regions of the country.

As a comparison, my '87 GTZ has surface rust in the roof at the top of the windscreen, rust in the rear parcel tray near one of the clip holes which must have spread and rust under the rear number plate where the two 'hooks' go through. I've rust killed the lot and plan to remove both front and rear windows to check its ok...ah the joys of having a panel beater as a neighbour

And the comparison is an '89 GTZ I went to look at with one of the members here (not naming incase its some uber secret project now  ). But I looked all over it with a torch under the parcel tray even and there was NOTHING!! 8O

Gah...the bastard :)

But then again my '83 AE86 is $&#$% mint in the roof, sills, doors, front gaurds etc. Only problem is one rear arch where the inner and outter skin join and its impossible to get to it inside. They all have that problem though.
