GIVE me ur broken bits and ill find out how it (epic) FAILED

Postby gasman » Mon Mar 10, 2008 10:36 pm

give me your broken car parts and ill figure out how it failed for my uni project. some of the tests performed will be hardness testing and electron microscope scanning. At the end of it you will have a full professional engineers report with estimates forces at failure and conditions.

some good and interesting failures are fatigue failures in steel shafts or similar.

some requirements are that the fracture surface cannot be corroded (badly) because once you stick it in the electron microscope it will BURN, limited to mainly steel and aluminium parts because they are more interesting and i can write more crap on it.

what i need from you:

-broken part (preferably both pieces)
-details on when and how it failed

oh btw im in chch at the moment so would prefer to pick up broken parts unless you got something really cool that broke then ill fork out some money for shipping

Did the same thing for my engineering degree. Its cool shit.

Good luck with the project man.

Also have you studied advanced thermodynamics? I thought gas turbine engines was an aewsome subject and would have persued aeronautical engineering if i hadnt gotten sick.

You should get in touch with audi man and see if you can get one of his broken diffs, would be interesting to see the numbers causing those to break.

yea we've looked into gas turbines but we didnt get to see one going in the labs because it was broken at the time.

also forgot to mention that we also can figure out what specifically what the alloy composition is of a metal and if it is forged or cast etc, so if anyone has any cracked 4agze pistons I could put the endless debate on weather its forged or cast to rest.

Will we get the parts back?

we have the two 1/2's of the input shaft for the hollenger sequential gearbox that we shattered. There are bits missing from the centre, cause it did actually shatter, rather than snap.

Also may have one of the snapped axels from the car too,
if that would be any good.

I figured out those flywheels bolts bottomed out in the crank. As I looked at mine from when wayne had the engine, the flywheel bolts were cut down. I also tried to install some 4age ones and some did manage to grab the flywheel just, others didnt quite make it.

I have a few fwd driveshafts that i've snapped.

You forgot to mention one important thing. Don't touch the two broken halves back together again!! You smear the damage.

Does your SEM at Auckland uni determine Carbon content?

for hypoeutectic in aluminium it's less silicon than the eutectic composition (%12.6) and hypereutectic is more than the eutectic composition.
