Results from test day @ Puke :(

Postby cat007 » Sat Apr 18, 2009 9:24 pm

Well it was a total blast!

2nd to last lap of the last session of the day I decided to take out a little fraser type vehicle on the back straight then out brake him going into the hairpin. Done this before, out braking most others including a wrx strangly enough....

Anyway - I checked pedal, yep, there's pressure, I kept my foot in it up to about the 150mark and HARD on brakes - all fine, then pedal goes to floor, CRAP!

Next stop, over grass, over gravel pit (sideways, and all I could think from after watching an MR2 roll earlier in the week was "don't roll, don't roll, DON'T ROLL"), and then onto the grass (backwards) and BANG into the wall, again backwards.....bugger

All is well I think, car's stalled and there's smoke EVERYWHERE - but it appears to be all from the brakes and coolant blowing out due to the engine being stalled. I start the car, sweet - head off to the pits - then the engine is just DEAD! Nothing at all - bugger.

Get towed back to pits and try and figure out what the f*ck has happened. After some head scratching and verifying the injectors aren't firing, someone says "it seems to be turning over a little too fast - has it got compression" - GOOD POINT! Turns out the cam belt snapped. I think when I was flying over the gravel trap in reverse, there were bits of gravel pushed into the lower cam belt cover thingy which must've got jammed and buggered the belt - grrrrr

I was hoping no-one would be there as I wanted some clean practice - but I was so pleased to have other cars to overtake :)

You sure were - I have it on video too hehe

Just cant import it off the camera to my home pc as it's not good enough and makes everything choppy and out of sync lol
Will have to either bring work computer home tomorrow or wait till Monday :(

And Ken, what are you talking about? I zoomed past you ;)

Much damage?

I've been off there backwards but passenger in another car.

So is the engine sweet? how about the brakes? boiled them?

Also how were the slicks?

Nah no damage at all really. Back bumper is pretty scratched up and a scratch mark on the rear quarter as well. And dirt and gravel and dust EVERYWHERE - it's amazing how much it kicked up lol. Went all over the roof as well - its all in the gutters. Oh yeah and heaps of stones jammed in the lip of the slicks so they'll need to be taken off and re-sealed :(

Yeah engine is sweet - 1G's are non-interference which is a bonus

yeah brakes were find BUT - brake master cylinder gets stupid hot right next to waste gate and what-not. Front left caliper seized (sliding type caliper) and so the inside pad wasn't wearing. The outside pad melted its way all the way to the back plate and then decided to start welding that to the disk. The disk is pretty much hosed I'd say.

The slicks were wonderful! I was able to out brake and out-corner lots of cars on regular tyres :)
I had hardly any lift off over steer- and any that I had, it was pretty soft and slow, not twitchy and horrible like with my cheap "durun's" lol

I had SO much fun! I'm a little worried about putting the vid's up as I talk and yell and swear a hell of a lot through out them LOL

Hunt,
I was in the red 3 door carina. Was doing 1min19ish laps (3sge).
Glenn in the orange 4 door carina was doing 1min11s (1uzV8).
I was following you down the back straight, saw you tap your brakes about 6 times about the kink, then I see you disappearing in a cloud of grass and dust at the hair pin!
As I went around the hairpin I could see you were still the right way up so I didn't stop :)

I'm a bit puzzled about your left front brakes - I thought it might have been a stuck caliper slider. Having thought about it... stuck slider would usually wear out the inside pad I think.
Pull your brakes to bits and see what the sliders are like.
Maybe the friction material came off the backing plate in one or 2 pieces, this could explain why the pedal went long on you.

Can't find it on my video sorry, think the battery went flat during that session.

Ken
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

brakes possibly over heated.
When I ran mitex pads they over heated in 3 laps. The pads started coming off the backing plates.

other reports i have say the green machine was having a decent battle with a mad-man in an integra.

cam timing in the 1g's isn't pretty easy... not a lot of info on it but i used some the details from a 7m off the internets..

the only problem with mine is i have to lift the engine out a bit to get the front pulley off...

I can confirm that a lighweight body makes a 1g go well.

Outbraking a fraser... well maybe this wasn't the best idea..

good to hear no major damage!!!

1:19's pretty good for the power you've got! But I guess that's what happens when you have a light car lol
Hard to tell but I think I managed a 1:15 which is pretty poor to be honest. The video is choppy and hard to get a decent reading from :(

Oh an here's another excuse - so many times when going from 4th to 5th on the back straight, my gearstick would lock and I'd coast the rest of the way down the back straight lol

Yeah I was just checking to make sure there was pedal pressure there before jumping on them. They were a little squishy coming up to the hairpin before so just wanted to make sure they were there. They were fine for about 1 second, then it was like someone undone the bleed nipple on one of the calipers lol

Oh I just did a custom brake install lol
Put on some big 300mmx30mm rotors and wilwood calipers.
But feel as if I need to go to 330mm rotors next.

Yeah that integra was great to play with.
After seeing some pics I'm paranoid now that I wasn't watching who was behind me as much as I probably should've been - hope I didn't block people :?

Cam timing's a piece of cake! Done it after work in the dark on the side of the motorway after my cam belt idler locked up lol

I would've been fine to try and out brake him - but just not when my brakes were already cooked lol
It was my own stupid fault really. The lap before I knew my brakes were starting to go funny but I stayed out there and didn't slow down - if anything I was going even harder. I'm just happy I didn't smash into a wall or anyone else's car etc....

Here's some pics

Hopefully I'm not holding anyone up LOL

Image

The rear is squatting a fair bit!

Image

Check out that body roll!

Image

On the hunt hehe

Image

I think I'd just taken him coming onto the back straight:

Image

Move it or loose it!

Image

Ah - mr no fear Integra lol

Image

We need a faster reacting camera lol
