CarJam free info... possibly no longer!

Postby MrOizo » Sat Apr 10, 2010 9:59 pm

Came across this on Car Jam.

Not the bestest news now is it? :?

Thought it was always nice to be able to doa quick check on vehicles. Buying, remembering when rego/warrants are and all that...

http://www.carjam.co.nz/cms/2010/04/09/ ... er-threat/

CarJam is under threat

An item of note is the NZTA’s recent public announcement that the free data made available to CarJam may no longer be free which will seriously affect our ability to deliver what you need to make buying and selling safe in the New Zealand automotive market.

If NZTA goes ahead with their plans CarJam will no longer be able to offer the reports, you all know and love, without charge.

Actually I think it is privacy related, probably due to people stalking and stealing using the motor vehicle register a stolen licence and $2.60 to find out where a car lives. That's my best guess anyway :?: So probably nothing to do with "free" $ information, but more about ramping up privacy.

They didn't seem to care until Carjam came along. They probably just wanna get a slice of Carjam's pie after seeing how popular the service has become. Whether you have to pay for info or not doesn't really change how private it is

"they" don't give a damn one way or another

My thought is that it will get to the "you can't get the information" stage, regardless of money.

To do that they need to make sure the ownership change and security issues that are with current system are dealt with.

If we cannot find out the registration history of the cars, the buyer will need to be protected by government. For example, I don't want to have my car impounded for which I paid my own money, just because 3 owners ago old owner defaulted on repayments. It should be person that sold car with security problem, perhaps prosecute them for fraud.

Registered owner status does not make you a real owner, this ambiguity creates a lot of problems. Changing ownership process is to easy to stuff up for example, it is up to new owner to change ownership, in reality it should be three person deal (new owner, old owner and a witness).

My point is that being registered owner means jack all, and it just makes you receiver of the infringement notices. If some one would dispute the ownership by saying "I gave this person $6000, here is the scribbled paper that he signed" can cause a lot of grief to real owner.

If this system was operating in Russia, it would get exploited in no time.

The free information didn't tell you any of this anyway

You will always be able to run VIR's and such.

And it only costs $1 to search the PPSR register for any securities against a vehicle.

its no different to the likes of Lemoncheck, VIR etc where people pay the fee and they get your address and the previous registered owners also. Carjam only gives odometer history, WOF/reg status and general details of the car (year, make, model, how many seats, engine size, chassis number) for free but not the owner name or address for free, you still have to pay the $12 or whatever it is.

But once NZTA no longer give out free information, they'll be in the same boat as Carjam won't they?

this first link gives an address to e-mail to- if enough of us do it... [shrugs]
