Power steering pump/rack rebuild kits - Availability

Postby mikeBrotherd » Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:52 pm

Just wanting to know if aftermarket kits are available to overhaul power steering pumps and racks. In my case im after a kit to do a 1JZ pump and rack from an A70 supra.

Tried Toyota? PS pump seal kit is ~130 from memory. Bearing is not in the kit though, extra 80 for that from Toyota or 20-30 from bearing supplier.

I did the o-rings in my 1JZ turbo pump for $1.50, if the bearing has gone then the main seal is probably toast allowing fluid through to it.

Cheers for that. Yeah my pump is noisy under load and seems to have a continuous layer of oil on it, so i think the seals are gone.

Also dose anyone know if the symptoms of my pump would result in the car having a heavy steering feel to it? My black GA70 seems to have mint steering that makes the car feel agile.

PG as mentioned above are pretty sweet for all that kind of shit.

they may even have an exchange rack if thats what you want, possibly pumps too.

Managed to source a seal kit from one of our parts supplier for $65+gst. Pulled the pump of last night to inspect. Old seals were mud.

Will update pics and info tonight.

damn that was a long night.

Pulled the unit out and stripped the parts to see if kit matched and worth repairing

Kit matched and the pump looked like it was serviceable. Clean all parts in kero wash bay and wet-n-dry'd the cam ring to take out any lite scours. (had already replaced main bearing & seal in these pics)

Next was to reassemble the unit with the new seals as toyota intended. I followed a PDF i found on a forum, makes this part easy. PDF is listed for 2jz power steer pump/rack/column but is the same unit used on many toyota's.

Refit pump and follow PDF instructions to bleed and try out the new pump. I made a dumb mistake of reassembling my flow control valve with the spring and the valve the opposite way round, caused the pump to do nothing below 3k rpm and then all of a sudden make the steering feel so lite it was dangerous. Didn't have to pull the pump of to swap them back round. After correcting steering feels improved and makes the car feel more stable on the road.
