tumble weed... and runx doing odd things

Postby barryogen » Wed Feb 28, 2007 12:27 pm

so... nothing interesting happening with Toyspeed in Dunners at the moment huh?

The Runx is doing some odd things again. A few weeks back it started randomly pulling either left or right while driving, not hard left or right, just enough to let me know.
http://forums.toyspeed.org.nz/viewtopic.php?t=54203&highlight=

It ended up being diagnosed as a bent suspension arm that looked like it had been belted with something, so it was replaced.

Now it has started doing it again, only a lot more noticeably, and there is nothing visible at all on the suspension arms.

The other odd thing it has done in the last week or so is full throttle for no reason at all, right foot wasn't burried, it just randomly did it, cruizing down the motorway, and it started accelerating, I hit the clutch, and it hit redline pretty much instantly.

I hit the pedal with my foot hard, and it didn't make a difference(fixed it in my old car when it did it), so I turned the car off, and back on, still stuck, left it a few mins, turned it back on and it was fine.

Your thoughts?

followed the cable last night, all looks fine on the outside, and it moves freely so I would assume fine inside too, is there anything else that controls the throttle other than the pedal and cable? The car doesnt have drive by wire, they didn't use that until a few models later, but the pedal still had the same feel when it was accelerating as it does normally.

stiff pivot? huh?

not on drugs... havent done any of that in months.

And everything looks as it should in the engine bay.

butterfly thing looked fine, nothing sitting in there that would catch on anything, pulling to the right appears to have stopped for the moment too.

there didn't appear to be any greasy crap in there, mild oil smell, but no more than a usual new ish engine bay.

Pedal feel was normal, which is why I don't think it is cable, but I'm not a mechanic at all, but I can follow logic puzzles, and this is just one big f*ck off logic puzzle.

This is caused by the TPS (throttle position sensor)

I have had this happen to me in my Rx7 and it didn't go away till I unplugged the sensor and turned over the engine(this reset the ECU's sensor values). Then plugged it back in and it never happenned again.

But if it's tricky and only sometimes I recommend getting your vehicle scanned for error codes. Then u will get the full jist of whats really going on. I u wanna call me at work I can set u up a time to come in and we can scan it and find the faults. I will try and get ya a good deal too

All sorted.

There was a split tube after the butterfly, mechanic pulled it off, shortened it buy about 2cm(the split bit), and slotted it back on, tightened clamp, and it hasn't done it since.

Pulling was a loose bolt that had elongated where it was meant to be holding, hard braking/acceleration moved the suspension arm enough to bend it. replace arm again(ouch), and got the elongated bit done too.

Happy happy (but broke) Dave.

Wasn't there a recall on some late model toyota's because of faulty steering/suspension arms lately

well, it did the full throttle thing again, hit ~140 heading up from GI to Lookout Point before I was braking, to pull round the corner(to stop), but it came right as I was just about to flick on the indicator.

Any ideas?
