OBD II reader

Postby barryogen » Tue May 22, 2007 10:22 am

Does anyone happen to have an OBD II reader that I could borrow?

I'm getting a bit more interested in the geeky side of car diagnostics.

rough day at work yesterday, 16 hrs away from it has returned me to my usual easy going state.

Yes, that would be good... however I had made the assumption that being relativity late model it would be OBD II compliant... thought I should probably check, but Toyota NZ is not being particularly helpful, and no-one anywhere seems to know for sure.

so I have another question... Does it f*ck anything up if you plug an OBD II reader into a car that isn't compliant, or does it just not read anything?

OBD2 plugs are a standard plug, there for are diffrent to the standard toyota plug. Should be in the drivers footwell above the peddles me thinks.

You realise that actual ODB only relates to emission related faults?

We have a real good scan tool at work that does OBDII as well as alot of other stuff on almost all models.

But the fact that it cost more than 6 months of my wages,
it does not leave the w/shop unless it' being used by a staff member, and is getting charged out.

The DCN-Pro as shown there.
That's got the aussie software.
We have the Aussie, American, Japanese, Korean, and European software on ours.

Thats what the old man has at work. Buggerd if i could ever get it to work with the MR2 to do more than make the check engine light flash codes, or his 2000 PA33 Cefiro to do anything. You have to use these funny key things with the OBD plug :?

then what are these guys on about?
http://www.scantool.net/?mode=displaySoftware&software_id=39&category=ScanTool.net
The program lets you perform the following operations:

* Read diagnostic trouble codes, both generic and manufacturer-specific, and display their meaning (over 3000 generic code definitions in the database).
* Clear trouble codes and turn off the MIL ("Check Engine" light)
* Display current sensor data, including:
o Engine RPM
o Calculated Load Value
o Coolant Temperature
o Fuel System Status
o Vehicle Speed
o Short Term Fuel Trim
o Long Term Fuel Trim
o Intake Manifold Pressure
o Timing Advance
o Intake Air Temperature
o Air Flow Rate
o Absolute Throttle Position
o Oxygen sensor voltages/associated short term fuel trims
o Fuel System status
o Fuel Pressure
o Many others...

I'm mostly interested in the RPM, Load, Temps, Timing advance, intake temp, flow rate, throttle position... umm, pretty much all the stuff listed above.

It is pretty cool really, I'm only tinkering with it part time as I am borrowing the datalogit thing from a friend each time... really should shell out and get one for myself.
