16v 4age issues. white/blue smoke

Postby Pies » Thu Apr 08, 2004 1:38 pm

ok, so a few weeks back my AW11 started smoking like a mofo. its white smoke, little bit of blue in it. smells oily, loss of coolant and oil. etc... so i figure its blown a head gasket

so a few weeks later (today) i finally get the head off to find that the head gasket is still in very good condition. theres quite a bit of oil around piston 1 on the gasket tho but im guessin that has just leaked out of the head.

what else could be wrong if its not the head gasket?

rings most likely, they tend to go when the car is thrashed and/or old

lose of coolant could be from a leaky waterpipes, radiator, waterpump, thermostat around the gaskets, best way to know that its not the head gasket is to get a garage to check the cooling system for hydrocarbons, another easier way to check is for frothy shit everywhere

Possibility that the oil ring is stuffed on #1.
I had a car which had mint compression but the oil rings were gone causing the oil to puff rite throu!
failing that, what about valve seals?

we ran a pressure test on the cooling system and it was leaking somewhere. not sure where tho.

could be the valve seals i guess? but i think they were replaced not long before i got it
