Cold air intake queries??

Postby redline racer » Fri Sep 03, 2004 11:09 pm

Hey, I have installed a cold air intake on my ae92 fxgt and the duct is mounted on the bottom lip of the bumper, the duct itself isnt huge but i thought that in heavy rain/pudels etc. it may suck water up.The piping sort of goes up and around so it isnt as if its stright through. Is this a good idea having it mounted here? or should i change it to somewhere more sheltered, ie behind bumper?

I had one there on my ae92 for about a year and never had a problem, its very unlikely it would suck water up. Hit a deep puddle at speed and it might! (but you would probably soak the engine bay anyway)
mine was fine, only prob was when I lowered the car the duct got ripped off one night!

You'll hardly have anything suck up a duct. Mounting your filter right down there wouldn't be the brightest of ideas, but if its just a duct then dont stress about it

when u think about it, u drive through a puddle, lets say a max of about 3 drops of water will make it up the ducting to the filter, then it has to squeeze through the filter, through the manifold, and somehow, into the cylinder..!

..and what were u worryd about again?

Here's a challenge for some of you.

Hiace has the filter mounted on the left hand side behind the front wheel - ducted from a panel in the B pillar. How do I make a cold air intake for it? :P

i know exactly were ure talking about muzzie, i thought they were always a c**t to get to coz the hoist arm was always in the way!!

later model hiaces have this, but check for vents on the door panel /on the A pillar, round there, coz leter model suck air from these vents in the first place! which would be piss easy to tweak.

Mines the early square shaped one, takes the air from a vent low on the B pillar - bout the same height as the wheel arch. Wouldn't be so easy to tweak :x

i ment "B" pillar. oops

what about if i just made like a "side scoop" to put on the vent to increase cold air flow? I its already ducted to that vent, then all the hard work is already done for u

I was wondering bout that - but also wpndering how easy or hard it might be to accidentally rip it off.

Or have some inconsiderate kid try to rip it off.

i had a cold air duct very similarly setup catching cold air from under the car. it wasn't possible to rip out and i too worried to hell about puddles and hard rain.

a BIG puddle wouldve been a problem, but after about a year or so i took off the ducting when i was degreasing the engine, and found that not only had water indeed found its way up the duct but it was pooling just inside the housing around the filter.

that meant that effectively the filter lay in a puddle, so i took it off!

now the response is not so good. crap actually - prolly due to me getting used to the added pickup with cold air.

one things for sure, my car never screamed harder than when i was down the south island in the middle of winter.

some people have mounted their filter and afm's right in the bloody bumper in front of the right hand tyre. i personally don't like the thought of how much dust must get into it, but their arguments are that that's what air filters are for.

meh.

im still trying to work out the best of cold air ducting without going over or under. so it looks like taking out a headlight for dragging with cold air might be the only answer.

just means on the street, i wont be as mean as i am on the track :P
