EP82 Problem HELP!!!!

Postby Ali » Sun Sep 05, 2004 9:27 pm

Hey my Starlet EP82 is overboosting through to 16 then hits fuel cut (Bear in mind it has a external wastegate) and it's also missing badly especially under load. I've replaced the spark plugs but it's still doing it. Would it possibly be electrical (e.g leads) also the car has no air flow meter so if it was boost leaking the car would just simply run without boost.

Any ideas, cheers

what size and brand is the external w/g with the missing you would want to check teh resistance on the leads and or swap them round to see if the problem dissapears

Ep82's don't have a air flow meter they run a map sensor instead, so that is not your problem, if you had a boost leak then the turbo would just be working harder to overcome the leak. The fuel cut varies from car to car basically but anywhere between 12 & 14.5psi seems to be the norm with most cars cuttinga round 12-13psi.

Your miss, is hard to diagnose without seeing the car. But in saying that check the obvious, Base timing should be 10 Degrees, check the leads, including the coil lead(HT one), Are the plugs the right heat range & are they gapped correctly(toyota says 1.1mm which is approx 44thou, I would normally run less than this on a turbo car say 25-30thou or around 0.7mm). If that doesn't fix it then you either need to look at the fuel system e.g. pump/filer/injectors as if you have changed these the car will more than likely be running lean, if you have maybe you need to replace the filter, check injector/pump flows.

If none of the above works, then you'll be chasing something really odd & need to start looking for worn/damaged sensors. Cracked distributor cap that sort of stuff.

well over boosting oviously means you need to sort out the WasteGate.. seems clear thats the problem..

Check the leads i got missfire under boost in my old starlet it wasnt the plugs

it was actually the lead the long plastic part that goes down had a slight crack in it and it was Arcing onto the metal tube that makes the head and tube that feeds down to the Spark Plug..

i THINK i have a spare pair of leads here if u want to TRY process of elimination..

You will have misfire at high revs because it will be detonating like a bastard

Questions:

What size external on what size turbo :?:

How long have you been running the external :?:

How old or when was the last time you checked/changed your plugs and leads :?:

What sought of fueling system are you running :?:

Have you removed your fuel cut :?:

Have you checked your ignitor & coil :?:

As others have said, most likely a process of elimination but may as well start with the obvious 8)

I'm with the idea of the HT leads.
I had a misfiring problem in my car recently and tracked it down to that. Replaced them and she was as good as gold :)
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.
