Water pump reliable life on 4agze

Postby beeker » Sun Dec 11, 2005 10:14 am

how many km's should a water pump live for reliably on a 4agze.

Seems like some manufacturers change them as a disposable item at ~100,000km

And come with the back plate... unlike some aftermarket ones. If you are running a larger crank pulley pays to bear that in mind too. When mine came off it was quite badly pitted and I was told that the probable cause was that the pump was being overdriven and cavitating. Usually just replace it with timing belt etc so 100km sounds about right.

well at $41 for an aftermarket one,
they cheap enuf to do at any stage

its hard to guage how long they will last for, some may last forever and a day, some maybe just a day.

the thing to watch with aftermarket ones is unlike the toyota ones they dont come with the backing plate or the gaskets/orings.
and often its the orings that will leak....

i have found on a gze the impellor (sp) shaft seal is the weak point, probably bescause the higher load from the s/c, the previous owner of my went through 3, but ive never had a problem since ive had the car

also make sure you running coolant mix, not just water, as coolant will lubricate seals better than water, in my opinion the most cases of leaking water pumps are because of people run just water (same goes for bhg, blocked radiators, jammed theromstats)...

i just run water ... brown water at that ..
ive never changed the water pump ...
its done about 100000kms with me driving it with track time .. its no longer been running the fan stuck on the end of it ...
but i would say the toyota genuine pumps are safe as houses !!!
A+ would defnintely trade with toyota again
