Bigger brakes for KE70

Postby Hachiroku » Wed Feb 22, 2006 5:40 pm

I'm looking at upgrading the front brakes in my ke70 project for as little coin as possible. If all goes to plan I'll be running an AE86 diff with matching discs. What's my best option for bigger fronts? Is there a bolt in strut swap that doesn't bugger up the suspension geometry? Will I need to upgrade the booster / master cylinder / lines?

cressida struts are bigger than cel/supra items plus you can use the sida lower arm aswell!

I've actually got some Cressida struts in the shed but I thought they would stuff the geometry up. Steering axis inclination or something?

Yep, I take it you mean Steering Axis Inclination Angle. In a nutshell, itll be up the piss and youll have positive camber because of the angle the struts are on a Cressida. You have a couple of options.

1) Install them and put up with positive camber, doesnt look or handle pretty.
2) Wait for Grotty to finish the brake adaptor kit he was making for adapting 10" Vented brakes to old school struts.
3) Do what I did, by far the most stupidly expensive way, but gives the best results if thats what youre after. (Check my profile)

Is there nothing that can be done to address this? I had a bit of a search and the Corona / Cressida struts seemed to be a popular option for ae86 / ke70 etc especially in aussie. There wasn't any mention of geometry though. Will AE86 front struts go in? Would they be worth it?

fro ke30 rt130 corona struts and brakes etc bolt right in with the lower control arm changes, i think there are about 260mm disks? and some 2 pot.. so im not sure weather the conversion would be the same for the ke70...

Thanks dude but AE85 brakes are no good to me. AE86 are vented so at least they're a bit of an upgrade. Surely they'll go straight in? What about upgrading hydraulics?

2 door wagon rotors are about 20mm larger I think? Could be an easy upgrade.
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons

what demands the upgrade??? engine mods/transplant.
if it's just a case of better braking performance with less fade, just fit some decent pads to it.

I'm (hopefully) putting a 4age in it. I want it to go, stop and handle at least as well as an AE86. I may be looking at another option for the rear end now. My mate has an Aussie R31 Skyline with a Borg Warner disc brake LSD. If I ask nicely I may be able to get it for $150-200. Anybody know anything about these?

Borg Warners, have an offset diff head, which means one axle is longer than the other and the head isnt in the middle of the housing, this means you MAY only have to shorten one axle. Theyre a really common diff, same as older Commodores, so parts are plentily available. But other than that it requires the same amount of work as any other diff swap.

the money you'll save by just doing pads, can go towards uprated springs/shocks.

Jebus: Yeah I'm aware of the offset diff head which I thought would be a bonus (half the price to shorten 8) ). Same stud pattern is good too. They're a queer LSD though aren't they? Springs or something instead of plates?

My AE86 diff already owes me $620 because Synaster1 (Toby Richards) sold it to me as a LSD when its not. Should I just chuck this in or sell it and use the money to mod the BW?

Fangsport: New shocks, springs and bushes are already budgeted for.
