gearbox removal help ***PICS***

Postby bluemaumau » Sun Mar 19, 2006 12:11 pm

ok im doin my first engine removal and ive got all the bolts i think out that join the engine to the clutch flywheel housing,
one bolt remains, im not to sure if this needs removing as it seems near impossible, the only tool that could get it would be a tiny 17mm o ring spanner  - which i dont have.

the box is a e52 coupled to a 4agze afm engine.

this nut is located my the rear gbox mount (next to the firewall)
and is inbetween the clutch/flywheel housing and gearbox housing ,

- the same area the speedo is put in.

i wanna know if this needs to be removed im sure it does, but man what a stupid place to put it! :x

also can any1 tell me how many bolts in total that connect the gbox and engine?

i know its hard to help me but if anyone which the same engine /gbox combo could have a look it would be real helpful.

cheers will

Got any pictures?- thay would make it easirer...but, going by your description, the 17mm towards the engine, by the speedo drive- than yes, you have to undo it. Have you got the driveshafts off?, should be able to get there with a socket and small extension.

yea shafts are off.

the speedo drive is slighty above this nut.

and both this nut and the speedo drive are inbetween the clutch flywheel housing and gearbox.

so you can get a socket on but a ratchet wont fit.

and most o rings are too long and theres no room to turn it!

dont have camera, will try get one on monday night.

thanks

are you trying to undo it from the top or bottom? because I undid mine from the bottom, used an air rachet to take it off though so was a bit easier :)

just assuming, but he said air ratchet, not gun anyway, so it would be bent.

Im not to sure about the GZE but on my 4AGE I use a socket and a reeeeally long extension. BTW, a 17mm spanner is one of the more common tools on a Toyota so I'd suggest getting one.

i have a 17mm spanner its just its too long so you cant actually get the nut to budge becase its hits either the firewall or gbox housing. -thats why i think i need a tiny 1.

i cant use a long extention because its is inbetween two extruding housings.

I never ever had the problem you described (removed/installed lots of different gearboxes, E5X, C5X, C160, S5X etc)... Are you sure you are removing the right bolt?
if you are talking about long bolt wich goes through rear gearbox mount, it is possible to access it from different angles, say from right side with lots of extensions, or from the bottom, medium extension/u-joint or from top without extension just the ratchet with normal socket on it.

Are you sure its holding on by that bolt? Because it looks like you dont have to remove that one. You only have to remove the three bolts that are holding the mount on and it should come out, unless its holding on somewhere else

btw how hard do you have to pull to get the gbox to slide off? is there anything that could stop this?, eg, leaving it in gear :?

If it has not been off for a while, it will probably be a little stuck and you will need to 'crack' it off. Buy that, I simply mean you may need to wiggle it side to side a little or perhaps leaver it off for the first cm or so. Being in gear or not makes no difference.
It may be heavy'ish (depending on ones strength), so make sure you are ready when you do it.
Just make sure all driveshafts are out of the way etc and you have the car jacked up enough (with stands!) and its out.

yea they can sometimes be pretty hard to pull out; try leavering it off a little bit. if it starts moving a bit you'll know that all the required bolts are off.
