4afe cooling system problems.

Postby ollieboy » Tue Jun 27, 2006 12:54 am

On my dads car (1992 Ceres) the temp gauge displays zero while open road driving and only starts to move when driving in a city or when idleing. When you go back on the open road though it goes back to zero. The car is running rich because of this and smoking like a mother father.

What do you guys think it would most probably be. My thoughts are thermostat or water pump. The cars done 180,000kms, is the water pump likely to fail around these km's or should I look elsewhere.

I would try and work it out for myself but it averages 5 degrees a day here and the Ceres is a c*** of an engine to do anything to so want some ideas to try before I go out so I can be quick and not freeze.

what extreme conditions???

where I come from, in winter we ran cars without radiators or thermostats (just straight pipe) and heater on full all the time....

In fact in hotter weather thermostat would open more often (more wear) than in cold...

The problem with needle on cold most of the time lies in faulty thermostat (or less likely air lock, or faulty sender/guage)

check themostat, but could very well be an air lock in the heater.
my Levin had what i thought a dodgy thermostat, or over heating due to air pocket in heater (being level with radiator cap).

get front of car up in the air( or on an angle) when topping water up to get rid or air in heater.

turned out the my H/G was blown, pushing air into the heater, and pumping water out the overflow. bubbles only appeared in radiator/overflow when front of car was well above the rear.
I've been a bad bad boy. I should read the rules and behave before I get spanked by an admin

f#@k you i won't do what ya tell me

Yeah, this is exactly what the problem was.

Cheers for your help.
