EGO sensor - when do you replace?

Postby Stealer Of Souls » Wed Jul 14, 2004 7:56 pm

I'm wondering how you would know when to replace the EGO sensor...

Engine check codes should give you a good idea.

This leads to another (probably obviously answerable) question...

How do I check the check codes and what am I looking for?

Hey all...
Long time ago I was asking this question... And it's reared it's head again.

I've just finished installing a new combo gauge thingy which has and AFR reading on it. After tracking down the EGO sensor wire and connecting to it I fired up the gauge...
And no AFR reading... Or more exactly, it was off the bottom of the scale.
I have only run the car for about five minutes, as it was getting late and I had a long list of other stuff I had to finish. Is this my problem? Do i need to take the car for a good drive first?

Also, I've had the car on the dyno and the AFR was fine, so I'm assuming it's still okay since nothing has gone wrong.

Redmist mentioned checking the engine codes. How? What should i see? It may be a moot point since I don't know if my check light actually works...

There is a detailed article on club4ag re checking codes. Its a matter of jupering the diag port (E1 and TE1 from a very vague memory) and counting the blinks.
I gather you have plugged the AFR gauge up to the O2 sensor not the sensor on the cat? The Cat sensor is simply temp.

Edit: found the club4ag article. http://www.club4ag.com/faq%20and%20tech ... 0Codes.htm

Cheers guys.

Yeah, it's connected to the factory O2 sensor in factory cast manifold (is that the right term... I forget).

I'll have a squiz at that article and see if it works for me (sooo much dodgy wiring).

I've got a 4AGE manual. I didn't even think to check in there... It's all been such a tight time table... I'll have a read tonight.

factory type narrow band oxygen sensors suck and you were wasting time and money even connecting a guage to it. if you want AFR's which are of any use what-so-ever you need a wideband 5 wire sensor and the appropriate guage/meter to go with it

The sensor is there. The gauge does it anyway... I just want the pretty lights to go up and down because they are there and they're supposed to.
