Windscreen wiper issue

Postby postfach » Thu Mar 29, 2007 7:29 pm

Hey guys,

My windscreen wipers have been playing up recently and when I use them they sometimes get a mind of their own and start wiping on the normal speed (the one directly after intermittent) regardless of the position the switch is in (unless its on the fastest speed in which case i dont notice until i slow them down or turn them off, and they keep going)

As you can imagine this can get pretty annoying, because if the rain stops and the wipers keep going they get noisy (obviously because the windscreen is dry) and the only way to stop it is to pull over and unplug the wiper motor, because even turning the car off and on again doesn't always work.

Any ideas?

lol, they still keep going when you turn key off?? so when you get in the car put key in the wipers turn on?? what kind of car?

this is what i would do.
strip dash around steering wheel and ignition wires.
get a testlight and test all wires till you find the wires that control the wipers and their speeds according to what position the swicth is on. the problem will be ther somewhere, maby its a loose plug or something giving the wiper motor direct power and bypassing the switch??

other than that im lost, haha this will take a few hours, bloody fiddly wiring in cars!!

Can only be a few things,
In most likely order,

1, Wiper motor park contacts, ( replace the motor )

2, Intermittant control timer ( if it's not inbuilt in the switch,

3, Wiper switch.

heh, with the key in the "off" position they don't go, no, what i mean is if i turn the car off, and the wipers are turned off, but still going because of the fault, the wipers will stop (because there is no power going to them) but if i turn the key back on again, they sometimes start up again.

I cbf stripping the dash till the weekend so I'll try that then if I don't find another solution before then.

Don't have a spare one of these at the moment but i'm sure its the same as the supra one so i'll be able to find one if it turns out to be that

2, Intermittant control timer ( if it's not inbuilt in the switch,

I think i have a spare one of these lying around, so i'll look for that and give it a go

3, Wiper switch.

fingers crossed it's not that :P

thanks for the help

you think you have issues??

pfft, last time I used my wipers on my starlet, the drivers side wiper decided to continue past the edge of my windscreen and tried to wipe my drivers side window for me  is that a problem or just a clever wiper? 8)

that happened to me too, and when i changed the pump i accidentally dropped a bolt into the compressor on the front turbo and had to take it off to get it out lol. anyway, lots of suggestions to try now, hopefully one of them is the solution

re: the wiper hitting the bottom of the window, undo the nut holding the wiper on and pull the whole arm off and put it back on rotated a little further clockwise

Ah I can beat that with my Corona. Think it's actually screwed splines.

Depending on windspeeds etc my windscreen wipers stop at different places. Most of the time when I turn them off they cover my Registration which is awesome for parking when you drive for 3 months with no reg cos you forgot

Anyway. So the drivers wiper either goes all the way off the windscreen or the passenger one hits the bonnet causing paint chips. Sometimes both in one sweep i.e the up and then the down. But they always work when needed... under 130kph that is.

Also check your relays. My brother had a similar problem in his pulsar turned out he had buggered on of the relays. When I say that I mean... we replaced one of his relays and problem went away, hasn't surfaced again since.
