silvertop into ae82

Postby .:O4AGTZ:. » Mon May 14, 2007 10:44 pm

just a few questions, looking to upgrade my ae82 from the bluetop to a silvertop. firstly i aint done a conversion before and wouldnt say i could, so is there anyone in wellington that could be recommended? and also is it safe to use the gearbox that was bolted to the bluetop if i use a good clutch?

One topic is probably enough buddy.

And the gearbox is fine.

As for in wellington, no idea, but any shop could do it, its piss easy.

hey, even if you do the grunt work yourself you will save heaps
pull out original engine and box
bolt box up to engine, switch to 20v flywheel and clutch

use original mounts on silvertop

Put engine in.

You will need to pay someone to modify exhaust (unless you are lucky and it bolts up)

wiring (not really that bad, but id say allow $500 to pay someone to get it running)

and coolant lines (being an ae82 the radiator has the hoses in the right place, so run the 20v radiator hoses)

allow a day to pull old engine out and clean engine bay.

Allow 3 hours to put box and clutch on (will take less, but pays to be generous with time) and allow another day to put engine in.

if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask and i should be able to help.

I shouldve really made a step by step guide.

I have a 20v ae82 that i converted so if you have any questions.....

Just use the silvertop box with the 16v shafts, bolt straight in :) way less stuffing round and dont even have to split the box from the engine then

So does the silvertop engine mount fit the ae82 chassis? or should I use the ae82 engine mount and braket?
Will the 20v extractors fit the 16v 2>1 section?

Did you notice much difference between the two engines?

Err not completely

The bottom tank of the radiator is in the right place, the top one isnt and needs a custom hose made up (i made one by chopping up the 16v hose that winds its way around the cam belt covers and to the water pump, ask gurutasker if you want pics as its in his car now)

You can fit a 20v radiator in and use the factory hoses, but you have to cut the lower mounts and reweld them on a little further down the rad support panel, otherwise you wont be able to close the bonnet. Also its worth realigning the top brackets to match up with the new radiator...

Just use all the mounts and brackets from the ae82 and it will bolt in perfectly

I wouldnt think the 20v extractors would match up to the lower 16v section (i've never tried it myself), but give it a go and see if it works for you

if your cheap and rangi like me you can angle grind the mounts a bit wider and just smack em down with a hammer and block of wood.

weldings probably a bit better though :D

Cool, so the engine mount bolts onto the block no worries?
Might need to silicon up the hole in the cambelt cover if the mount is a different shape.

No problems at all. (bearing in mind there is only one on the block)

didnt have to bother with the hole in the cam belt covers either. Looks like it was meant to be there.

errr wrong

what i said is what i did, i used the ae82 radiator as bought from pete THA SHZ
and used 20v hoses.
everything was fine.

Maybe you used a non 4age ae82 radiator?

I dont know, but dont go saying people are wrong when they are talking from experience.

Sounds like there maybe different ae82 radiators

lol, i am talking from experience dude and what i had to do, so why are you calling me wrong in return?

highly doubting it wasnt the original gt radiator, as i'd replaced the factory hoses from the waterpump to the top tank a couple of months prior with genuine hoses.

i know the 4afe ones have a top tank setup much like the 20v one. perhaps you had one of those?

i was just giving you shi t for trying to say i was wrong.

as i said there must be different ae82 radiators, as the ae82 radiator from a gt worked fine with no mods needed.

Just out of interest, how about an AE82 with a carb 4AC? Would it be worth converting to silvertop, if so what can I keep, and what do I have to change?

Silvertops with box seem to be incredibly cheap these days.. and seeing as the old man is binning his AE82 sedan shortly.. (5spd, 4ALC) would it be worth repowering it? I understand the FXGT hatches are popular for racecars, but the sedan?

Lol, I assume that was for me? If its' a 5spd off an RB20E, DE, DET, RB30E, RB25DE, RB25DET, or diesel RD28 it will fit. Some C33 Laurels came with CA18E, as did GXi Skylines, those gearboxes will not fit RB. Also, RB25DET gearboxes will need a modified crossmember, and depending on series of RB25DET they came off, a modified clutch slave.

If that doesn't answer your question, I recommend having a look through:
