Hello, new to the forums, but looks like a good source of knowledge here.
I have a 20valve Mk1 MR2 that I purchased in a not too good state, and are slowly nursing it back to health.
The problem you are having with getting error codes out of the silvertop is probably TPS related.
To get into diagnostic mode as you already know you bridge E1 and TE1 then turn on the ignition, but also the throttle has to be open, eg Idle Switch closed(This switch is part of the TPS)
If the switch is faulty, throttle cable incorrectly adjusted, throttle body's open for some reason, wire boken, then there will be no codes.
This is easily checked by pulling the plug off the TPS and checking for near to zero ohms between pins 3 and 4 of the TPS.
If the TPS is ok, get the wiring diagram and make sure the circuit is ok.
After that ECU.
