Swaping Superstrut Struts

Postby BigDon » Thu Jun 26, 2008 9:36 am

Well I’m getting some new factory struts for my daily driver bzg super strut Levin from Mark at Manawatu Toyota (his service is awesome by the way). Now I have pulled my trd coilovers out of my race car many times and its easy but they are not super strut. I know the back are identical to the non superstrut ones so that sweet but the front is a different story.

So is there anything I need to know about swapping the superstrut ones that is going to make the job difficult? And will I need any additional tools over a socket set?

Also I need to change the springs as I have lowered springs on the struts at the moment. Normally I would use spring compressors to get them off but have been told it’s easier to leave the car on the ground and just undo the strut bolt while the car holds the spring captive. Anyone had bad experiences with this?

Cheers,

John

Not sure on the superstrut part, as my experience with it is limited (limited to swaping worn links with new ones on an ae101 gtz)

But the spring thing, i'd only do that to allow you to loosen the nut on the tophat as the car holds it all for you, and just wind the nut till its almost off, but not the whole way off. then remove the strut and use spring compressors to remove it properly without it all pinging off in all directions.

$&#$% that

it isnt uncommon for the strut top to be corroded on, or for it to stick.
if that happens when you remove the strut it could fly apart with out warning.... imo not worth the risk. use compressors.

you may need hammers of a large size to undo the s/s bits... they can be a bit awkward

You will make good use of a Ball joint splitter. Fork type tool that you whack with a hammer. Note: these are bigger than the tie rod ones. About $40 or borrow one. S/S falls aprt easily with one.

Awesome just what I was after, thought super strut was going to be a pita. But those instructions should make it way easier.
