go pickapart, pull ecu, take cover off, take pics of printed pinout on circuit board? (assuming its printed)

hahaha wiseguy, they stopped doing that along time ago. :)

I have the ECU with a fried output resistor would like to knw what it does so we can work out how it happened, without having to get the vehicle in etc

No he is not kidding. The ECU pin out will be in repair manual, since the car has been sold as NZ (I assume as previa) there will be a repair manual with TNZ in English. There are also aftermarket repair manuals (like haynes) in your local library (and on torrents/rapidshare) that you can borrow/scan/download.

Oh BTW: if the resistor is blackened/burned it is most likely the output transistor that is upstream of that resistor is fried (just trace the tracks from resistor).

If these ECU are available from pickapart is is more practical to get ECU from there, that is if you don't have skills/equipment to repair your ECU.

just trying to do the most for the customer with the smallest amount of effort because no one wants to pay for anything sadly,
If you have tried ringing any of the franchise's in Tauranga you would know they generally dont give out that information.

Send the poor/greedy customer to library

But seriously, what are the symptoms - what is not working?

toyota parts departments are more likely to help if you're there in their face rather than some guy on the phone  not too hard for them to hand you a manual, you find the page and they photocopy it

Can you trace it to the pin on the ECU?
Then inside trace the pin to the driving transistor. It will be 99% that transistor is stuffed. Actually if you spotted blackened current limiting resistor it is very easy to trace the track back from it to the transistor that has burned out.

Next step is getting numbers off it and finding equivalent. It is 30sec to replace it if you are good with soldering iron. Resistor will need to be replaced as well...

One more thing, before you try new ECU/or fixed ECU make sure that the idle speed control coil #1 is not shorted (measure resistance, it should be a few of Ohms), otherwise if it is shorted it will most likely stuff any ECU you try. Actually come to think, there is a chance that transistor hasn't been blown and ECU still will be fine (apart slightly blackened resistor), a very small chance, if the coil is shorted and drawing enough current to heat up the resistor but not burn out the transistor.
