3t backfire on deceleration

Postby Hachiroku » Sun Jan 30, 2011 3:21 pm

My carby 3t powered TT141 seems to be backfiring on deceleration. Compression is good across all 4 and timing has just been set, plugs and points etc are all new. Any ideas on likely cause?

Back firing, like when going down hills??

My carby hilux did that when i had a HOLE in my exhaust, mean backfires etc.

And my 1ggte supra done that too, it was fuel injected and i think, Done it because it wasnt wired up to shut the injectors off going down hills etc if you catch me
zing! Sig got nuked. Sorry bout that.

my TT141's 3T did it when it was carbied and it still does it now after converting it to EFI and a Tune ect

it doesn't seem to be hurting anything and i can live with it so it doesn't bother me

hole in exhaust?
weak ignition?
lean mixture causing misfire?
intake manifold leak?
PCV valve failure?

my 5k does it, but it running lean on the primary jet (4k carb) and hole in exhaust doesn't help.

removing or replacing the PCV valve fixed my rough idle in the end. after figuring out that it ran better by richening up the idle mixture screw that i had an intake leak somewhere. but after dousing the whole intake with water and checking for idle speed variations the only thing left was hoses coming off the intake. didn't have a brake booster. the pcv valve when removed dropped my idle heaps when put my thumb over it. this is normal, but i think mine is more than normal. getting new one soon

Yeah it does sound cool and it is incredibly common for carby vehicles. I wouldn't be worried.

Carby motors keep sucking fuel through the carb on deceleration so its usually unburnt fuel igniting in the hot exhaust system. If you want a really good backfire, turn off the key going downhill with your foot hard on the throttle then turn the key back on.......

side effects may include old people and dogs exploding and possible calls to the cops if you do it too many times in the same place at the same time in a very small rural town >_>

those were good times if i remember right :D

Haha I did that once in my old corona wagon while passing some road workers. One of them shat himself and the shovel he had been holding went flying! Super classic.
