AFM vs trumpets

Looking at putting a silvertop 20V into project tofu. If I remove the FWD airbox and run with individual filters how do you work around the AFM not being inplace?

it wont if you are running stock ecu.
Either get blacktop ecu and loom with sensors, or run aftermarket fuel management.

silvertops run like arse on a blacktop ecu, it kills the mid range and run far to lean, I brought my kp60 racecar running that setup and it was horrible to drive, terrible on part throttle. We ended up wiring in a g4 storm loom and using the link out of my mr2, only made another 5 hp up top but made a much fatter midrange and heaps nicer to drive. From what ive seen a silvertop/blacktop will make more midrange/power with some form of airbox enclosing the trumpets anyway

Cool thanks. I think the best beat is to just get and airbox made up for RWD and stick with the silver top

i may have one of bazdas plenums available for sale with 50mm trumpets if you want to go down that route?

or look at either a MS3 or a cheaper link (G1,2,3 will also do just as good a job on a simple ST setup) and just run the blacktop MAP sensor. can be done for under $1000 i'm sure.

not sure how you would run a MAP sensor on ST throttles but i'm sure it can be done.

basically if you want to bin the AFM the easiest way will be to get a blacktop.

just do that, they are better anyway :P

the facelift silvertops are noticably better than the prefacelift ones though, not far off the performance of a blacktop. (megameet 10' dyno day there was about 5kw difference...)

you can tell them apart cause they don't have a stupid twin throttle linkage system on them.

finding a semi decent silvertop is another matter though. they are getting a bit long in the tooth now.

i think they have a slightly different throttle design and better tune from factory with a few other minor changes no doubt. maybe someone more knowledgable could fill in the differences...

i believe sergei discovered some differences between the injectors too (more holes in facelift version resulting in better spray pattern or similar)

as for the price difference, you get a motor thats not only newer, but better too. as mentioned above, most silvertops are on the old side, and have mostly been thrashed mercilessly by people like me.

as the old saying goes, (i think fivebob might have started this one, hah) 'quality is appreciated long after price is forgotten'

Yeah can't agree more. I'd rather pay a couple of hundy more for a good low Km motor than for a thrashed P.O.S I have to rebuild

yeah will get some pics as it comes together. Gonna do gaskets and big ends before I install it so will be some time. Need to sus out a plan to wire it up so will post new thread
