spacing a exhaust manifold

Postby steroidcontaskie » Tue Mar 13, 2012 8:28 pm

Update on project epic fail.

I got the exhaust manifold re surfaced and, despite telling them only to take off 2mm max, more than 5 mm was was taken off . Now the wastegate hits the sump of the engine and I need to space the manifold 5mm-10mm.

Anyone know where i could get a manifold spacer plate made or could i used a couple of thick gaskets?

Cheers
Edward

Sorry to hear it keeps throwing up issues :(

Can you make them buy you a new mani?

Surely if you asked for one thing, and they have done something completely different, the MTA would back you?

Failing that, I wouldnt use two gaskets, but would have the WG pipe altered slightly.

LOL @ MTA helping you idea.. MTA gets money from its members, it works for them.

AS for the OPs problem, if you can cad up a profile you could get a spacer laser cut out of 10-16mm Steel (or stainless) for probably $30. It should be pretty flat, but you might want to get it machined/surface ground to make sure its 100% flat

Thanks for the imput guys, any idea where in auckland I could get a 10mm stainless spacer made?

More details on what happened

Yea, I did ask them when I picked it up to make sure they only took off a couple of mm and they said they did. But when I got it home to have a look at it it was clear they had taken off way more.

One of the stud holes on the end of the manifold was down by at least 5 mm, but it was only just around the hole and the binding face around the exhuast flow was flat with the rest of the manifold. I told them to make it flat on the binding face and not to take it down to the stud hole, as that would stop the wastegate/manifold/turbo from fitting.
The manifold stat there for a week and when they got around to doing it they ended up taking the manifold flat to the stud hole.

What engine?
You could go and see the guys at one stop cutting shop in siverdale,
The can plasma, laser or water cut,
Be a bit more than $30, for 4cyl in stainless 10mm more like $70-90,
Water cut will be flat and wont require machining.

its a 2jzge engine under going a turbo conversion.

I dont mind $100 or so to get one made. Just want my car to start :-)

Would I just need to taken them my manifold as a template?

aslong as your gasket and manifold match, most places only need a gasket.

Yeah, i might have been a bit low on my estimate of price.. a straight 6 is a pretty long engine, and 1 off pricing is going to be a bit more expensive than the jobs we send them.
