XYZ vs D 2

Postby FST4RD » Thu Nov 08, 2012 10:15 am

Looking at adjustables for my Starion race/road project.
I was looking at the D 2 gen2 stuff. I know a few guys running them in their Starions and they love them. However I have come across a company called XYZ doing them now as well. Never heard of them, anyone enlighten me? Better, worse, the same as the D2 stuff?

Custom isn't really an option. Mate went this way and it was quite expensive. Starions tend to be oddball when it comes to just about every part.

XYZ is a good brand, especially if you go with their competition ones over the normal road ones (approx $2000 vs $1300)

in recent years XYZ brakes and suspension have been on the cars which have won a LOT of motor racing classes in NZ.

Unfortunately the budget isn't going to stretch to the competition ones.
I paid $800 for the car, and right from when I got it I made a promise that it would be done on the cheap. So far so good, cost me bugger all, mainly adds and spirits!
I did say though that suspension and more importantly brakes I would do properly and not skimp too much.

I have read that the new D 2 stuff is far better then the original stuff?

Talk to Bazda

Did the setup for the front of my KP Starlet (had to be adapted to standard struts) at a very good price and looks pretty good quality.

Thanks will do. Owned a couple starions and they are hard to get parts for.
LSD is proving hard. Either need a factory starion one, or one from a very very early 80s late 70s l200, l300, pajero etc. Not easy to find.

The only reason xyz has been in a lot of fast racecars lately is speedfactor in tga rebuilds them to custom specs and sets them up like a bilstein. Just xyz body and shaft with custom valve. Not cheap xyz you get off tardme.

Save up for decent fortune auto shocks from bazda they will be waay better than cheap pos. You won't regret it.

I would love too, but with an 8 week old and only 1 income at the moment it's a bit of a juggling act.

There is always the option of custom springs. The shocks that are currently in there are in great condition, and I can get custom springs to any specs I want for a little over $400, which will allow me to spend more money in other places. :?

Once you increase your springrate the shocks will do bugger all. best option is to do it properly imo. good quality coilovers will make a car.

Can def set up a custom set for you.
We weld them to your oem struts properly so it passes a certification.

Our pices are very similar to D 2 & XYZ. Maybe a tiny bit more but your going to get a good quality setup.

D2's - The new range might be better than their old but their shocks are not valved correctly from what i've seen.

XYZ race series seem to be good but you would be paying good money for them. More than entry level Fortune Autos which do the same job as they are valved like a Bilstein with digressive valving.

At the end of the day it depends on if you want a good quality ride or if you dont mind to sacrifice ride quality for cost.

I'll be in touch this weekend.
If they work out and perfect for track work I know a few people in nz and aus that would be keen!

With the welding required for fortune auto, is it definitely certifiable? I heard that certing any suspension that requires welding is near impossible at the moment? Possibly looking for some for my AE70

Welding to struts is fine as long as you do it right, take pics, and weld to mild steel not the cast parts.
Certified might want a crack test done which is shown on the pics above (white stuff on the bottoms).

Welding steering arms is an issue.

Can't weld to anything cast is the issue, note on mine the internally threaded section is welded to the strut tube only (with a sleeve for the smaller KP struts, AE70 probably won't need that). Those ones pictured have been xrayed and confirmed as ok with my certifier about 3 weeks ago.

It is you lucky day, I have photos if exactly what needs to be done (ae86 struts in a ae70)

Cut the existing strut tube off so there is still a small amount of steel to weld to.
Image

You then get a piece of steel spun up (cost my $40) to slip inside the bottom of the strut and also the new Fortune adjuster sleeve.

Put it all together like a boss.
