is my alternator naffed?

pretty sure my alternator is screwd cos i can charge my battery and the car starts, but even after a good drive it wont start when I try start it again.

multimeterd across the terminals and it says approx 12v when running and off

Does this mean my alternator isnt charging my battery or that my battery isnt holding charge?

does sound like the battery they need like 12.4v to start a car.it will charge just wont hold it.

sweet, was guna get one tomorrow and try it, and if it was wrong take it back :P. so if others are on the same track as me then ill go ahead with it.

who sells good batteries for a good price? any recommended brands?

if the alternator is working there should be something like 13.8v when the car is running.....check to make sure all the wires are still attached properly to the alternator, make sure the belt is still there/tight enough, and borrow someone elses battery that works before you go buying a new one, just in case they won't let you take it back

the battery should show 14.4v when the car is running :D

Interesting number... mine will start my car from 11.5V... that's as low as I've been, but it started so easily, I reckon I could go down another half a volt...

It's the volt's while cranking that matter, you need I think 10V off memory while cranking, depending on what kind of ignition and stuff.

It really depends on the battery and the car....
I think most won't have enough juice if they drop below 10V during cranking.
But if it's a big battery (or a small/low comp engine), and it's healthy then it might do the job down to 9...

Yeah, I got my Curren started on pretty low voltage, like rr,click,click,click,rr,click,click,r,brmmm, whew. Don't know what that translates to in volts tho

8v is the lowest you can go before your car wont start. depending on the engine = how many amps you need to crank it over

ok took alternator in and auto aprky tested it and said it was fine, so now will see if it lasts a long drive to make sure its not my bad wiring :S

Make sure the battery terminals are clean, just had a similar problem, car wouldn't start without a jumpstart but was fine once running, all due to dirty battery terminals....
