This, now confirmed information, implies that at least the mechanical TRD speedos fitted to early MR2's removed the speed cut.
Now that has been cleared up, all that remains is to determine if streatracer's MR2 has the mechanical or electronic speedo. Judging from previous posts the car is a '91 so unless it's a Dec '91 production date then it has a mechanical gauge.
So streatracer, what's the the prdoduction date of your MR2? Or if you don't know that, what's the chassis #?
