Matt Dunn supplied me a 20v one to change over the end to suit the smallport redtop with reduction .

will have to be redtop, unless the blue top is a reduction gear starter. the reduction type are completely different to the direct drive ones.

No, 20V and Redtop smallport reduction both use the same motor housing with different end brackets,

and bluetop is completly different. None of the bluetop parts are compatable with any reduction starters.

Ive found there are two types of starters on the ae92's
The 28100-15180 1.0Kw and
the 28100-15190 0.8Kw

Are they both reduction starters?
The 1Kw looks different to the others, looks like it has the motor on the top and a gearbox on the bottem or something.
The .8Kw looks simmilar to the bluetop .8Kw, it has the motor on the bottem and a solenoid on the top.

Would either of them do the trick? or do I need the 1Kw one?

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=95477379 This is what the 0.8Kw one looks like, simmilar to the 20v ones I think.
Is it reduction?

not too sure what Matt has done there, as he has descibed the opposite to what is in the picture. i suspect he was going to use the picture for his other auction.

the one in that pic is the smallport reduction one.

they are the same as a 20V one except for the front bracket.

They are planetry gear reduction,

not normal gear reduction like a 3SGE or 4AGZE one.

Wicked I got the right one then.

Put it in last night and it cranked it over mint. :D altough sometimes it just clicks and wont crank, so ill be putting in a good sized relay to drive the solenoid.

Put in a big 50A relay to bring in the solenoid and it cranks mint now.
Starts first crank :D

no just the starter that was designed the mid 1970's (bluetop same design as 2t one)

has nowhere near as much grunt as the smaller later reduction one that first came out in 1990.

The torque spec's may be within .2kw of each other, but that's at full speed.

The later one is gear reduction so probably has double or more torque at stall speed which is where it counts.

no, the case is smaller on the 20valve starters, better to just get a smallport starter, or you can do what the ae86 guys do and get a 1g starter adapter plate and have 1kw of cranking power, but still cheaper and easer to go small port starter, i have a small port starter motor on my blacktop with 11.5 comp, cranking very well,
