Just bear in mind some scrutineers will not pass one mounted under the driver's seat (or indeed anywhere in the driver's footwell) because if the catch is accidentally flicked (eg overalls etc) the extinguisher could roll under the brake peddle.

Having said that afaik many people do run them there, so I assume you need to make sure the release catch is turned inwards and cannot be caught by anything, or vibrate loose.

Also the "when seated" is generally read as seated and belted, so options are very limited in MR2s.

I'd probably consider putting it on the passenger's side of the the "transmition" tunnel as close to the gear shifter as possible; if you can reach it there and if there's something to bolt it to behind all the plastic.

Reaching extinguisher while wearing belts.

While this risk is true, as it says nothing about this anywhere in the MotorSport Manual, they are not able to fail you for that. If you are not happy with a scrutineer verdict, simply request a decision from the Clerk of Course of the event. In this case, the Clerk of Course would rule in your favour as the scrutineer would be making up rules that don't exist.

The rule is deliberately written as when seated, not when seated and wearing harness, so again, that should not be an issue. You will find that it states you need to be able to reach your mandatory controls (ignition, wipers etc) while seated and wearing belts. So the seated only requirement for the fire extinguisher is clear cut.

Think about it this way, your more than likely the only one to drive it right, how often are you going to move that seat ???

It should miss the extinguisher by miles. I've put extinguishers straight in front of the driver seat in about ten cars, and it hasn't got near in any of them.

as opposed to the back seat?

I'd think it would be hard to reach from the seated position... although you may not do racing, so might not be an issue, just a precaution.
