Are they tapered though? If they are how does the nut screw on, or is it just tapered up to where the thread comes out

I'm yet to see one that isn't tapered. And yes they taper up and then have thread coming out from the top of the taper

The rubber usually covers the taper on the new ones, but you can see where it ends and the thread starts

It's why you need a hammer to get them out.

if you were to slam it with normal geometry you end up with the tie-rods pointing upward... will it tidy up with some load on the wheel and any lowering you may have planned?
When in doubt, down and out.

i dont think it will handle the best but you could lower it and then get a sort of RCA made to sit hub up further but arm down but would still need to be dropped on the ground

I'd really love to own a slammed AE82, but to get more than a block from my house involves negotiating some vicious bumps :(

I'm just going for the 5x100 celica hubs - Bigger brakes and less hassle, if the studd pattern pisses me off I can just fix it later. I just really want to get it running before I start fiddling with details.

are you able to just change the "stub axle" bit with the studs on it over for a 4x100 one that uses the same bearings?

I looked at that but I couldn't figure out how to get it apart

I don't really mind anymore. I can always sort it later if it really bothers me.
