I used heat wrap on a steampipe manifold, was a well made custom twin entry one fusion welded with a tig. I thought it may help to keep underbonnet temps down a bit. Although it lasted a few ks it eventualy cracked that bad it blew a section right out near the flange area. When I removed the wrap I found the tubing was quite rusty so just welded it and refitted without the wrap.

not certain if the cracking was caused by the wrap or just the nature of the manifold heating up and cooling etc, but the section i repaired hasnt recracked again. but yeah it defenately caused it to rust pretty bad.

The pipe itself.

Although it did crack through a weld but not along it, in a sorta egg shape. Was on the last section welded to the flange so I could imagine there would be a fair bit of heat around that area where they merge and that.

the piece was just held in there by the wrap, or it would of dropped out.

Forgot to mention that I heat paint the headers & empty about a can of paint into the wrap afterwards... so not much chance of water getting through... smoked badly for a couple of drives afterwards, but it's all good now.

It's consumable
It makes everything it comes into contact with consumable as well.

People still get sucked in.

I can still see a use for heat wrap, just not in the extreme heat conditions some people use it in. With the heat generated in turbo manifolds, it's better to do proper coatings like HPC/Procoat etc. Even then, some of the coatings peel off in time.

I would never wrap manifolds again.
Did that ages ago and they cracked.

Wrapping down pipes and external pipes seems to be fine though.

heat wrap is ok if you are just trying to keep the heat off something like a clutch slave etc etc. A heat shield would be better imo depends on how much room you have to work with i suppose.

I tend not to agree, before I wrapped it the car had major heat issues (the radiator was boiling,
