probably age was the key factor. if a car does big k's quickly i think a cambelt could actually do 300,000KM+ without failing.

aren't cambelts supposed to be replaced every 5 years?

The zetec engines with auto tensioner are every 10 years, with manual tensioner every 5... Seems correct tensioning is pretty crucial.
Reality: A nasty hallucination that is caused by excess blood in the alcohol stream.

when a cobber bought his first diesil van, he done 300km + before the oil pump failed and lunched engine. 1C liteace.
