VVT Pulley

Postby 20v FX-GT » Wed Mar 24, 2004 10:16 am

Has anyone had any problems with their VVT pulley? Rattling on startup etc? Anyone know if the VVT pulley is the same on the silvertop as the blacktop? Anyone able to check EPC?

Thanks

they are different. its reasonably common for the damping fliud to leak out making them rattle, apparantly this doesnt cause any problems except the noise. can sell you a new one if you want but first youll have to tell me if you gotta black top or silver!

Its for a silvertop - is a blacktop one compatible / better / worth getting instead? Do they both alter the timing to the same extent?

What do they cost Mr Revhead?

So if the VVT system and pulley are different for blacktop and silvertop how do people get on with blacktops in AE101s?

I'm pretty sure someone on here is running a blacktop with AFM, just curious to see how it works together.

Does the pulley have to come from Japan or are they in stock?

Dude i got a spare one sitting in the garge i told penny about it last night but thats sweet -i'l give it to you for $50 and you can get someone to put it on and if doesn't cure the problem it won't cost ya a cent :) but if you find that it's the shims or something else it will still cost ya the $50!
Just quickly i bet thats the cheapest offer you've had so far?? 8)

Thanks for the offer dude :D

I'm going to take the car down to the workshop and see if I can tell exactly where the noise is coming from with one of those stethoscope type things and also check out if it is a warranty claim. If I'm sure its the pully and not the shims we will most probably buy your one and get it sorted. :D

Wouldn't mind having a look at your pulley either way though.

You can just earth out the vvt soleniod and if the noise changes or goes away then it's your vvt pulley. The cheapest and quickest way.

so is it vvt cam problem if the engine make noise when rev around 1200 - 1600 rpm... my AE111 engine got noise when start cold as the rev goes up to 1400rpm and come down after a while when the engine is warm...

generally youll hear the noise at idle.... tick tick tick tick tick, not to exessive, but there.

above those revs usually you dont hear it for its lovly whine >.> and i still cant *hear* a tick when i gun it... then again, everything is noisy X_X.

just install a vvt light ;) when dosnt turn off, its time to replace the vvt light :D.

What I think you'll find is the the VVT pulley is matched to the cam.
Blacktop pulley with Blacktop cam,
Silvertop pulley with Silvertop cam.

They may have different locators etc.

I run Black Top Cams with Black Top Pulleys on silver top, no noticable difference in VVT functionality.... infact feels the same, the only difference, I THINK, is that it pulls slighty better after 8000rpms till 9000rpm (limiter) with black top camshaft... but at those rpm VVT is off anyway...
