My old starlet had the same problem, was a gasket on the intake manifold I think. Quite possible that its a vacuum leak

If its a vacuum leak then it should be fine for a while. I drove around on mine til I got pissed off with it revving up and down when I was sitting at the lights (wasn't exactly a quiet car). Cruise in to a garage and get them to have a quick look and tell you what it could be

hey my mr2 had that, it was a vacuum leak, took it in for a tune and the they fixed it at the same time, you can drive it safely but get it fixed as a priority (if it does that straight from start up as mine did- bad for engine wear)
A plan so good my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about...

My 4AGE has had this problem three times now. Keep cooking the Cold Throttle Control bit on the Throttle body. If it happened suddenly (not developed over time), and it is a 4AGE this is the most common cause...
Does the engine still run? Or is it mush now?
