Turning Back Odometer ?

Postby z|gen » Thu May 13, 2004 7:09 pm

hey guys
im gonna rebuild my engine, and i was thinking about also resetting the odometer to zero, it currently shows just over 600thousand kms, but the engine already had a rebuild before that, so how do i go about setting it back to zero so i know how much i will have done since i rebuilt the engine ?

cheers David

By writing it down, rememberring it etc
It is highly illegal to rewind your odometer.

Because it is essentially fraud, would you like to buy a car that had a lot more kilometers on the car than the odometer indicated?

err...but wouldnt it give a fairer indication of how many kms the engine has done..or would it still be fraud..?

Because it is law.
If you get caught doing it ( and you will as the readings are entered into the system each warrant ), you may face a big fine and even prison time in major cases.

That's why there's so much of a fuss about jap import speedo's being checked.

The public dont want to buy a new 199 toyota altezza with 36,000 kms only to find that it has actually done 360,000 !!!

Yes, as far as the engine, but what about the chasis, the gearbox, the diff, the brakes, wheel bearings, interior, steering components, cooling system, prop shaft, electrical system etc?

Don't you hate it when you have some input to a thread as you're halfway down, and when you get to the end, you find someone has beat you to it???? :P
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

When I rebuilt one of my minis from the ground up (literally everything) I set the odo to 0. Would have been obvious at wof but I never got in trouble or mentioned.
In saying this when I sold it I didnt try and say it had been in a gaurage for 25years...
