tyre pressure for drags?

Postby IH8TEC » Tue Jun 08, 2004 9:56 am

was just thinking when i was reading the posts for the toy/hon drags, talking about gettign quicker times with less pressure in tyres,

reason i ask, is when i ran 14.78, i had 32psi in the tyres as i run on the street, how much faster could it be with just doing that, and what pressure do you guys think, my tyres are r14, 195/60 dunlop formula 901's

cheers

on street tyres i dropped my pressures and it made it wasy slipprier.
On decent rubber I think it works by dropping the pressures so the tyres can crinkle.
I played around but found it made no difference when u dont have any traction at all to start off with :D

dropping the tyre pressure means the tyres will splt out more, so it wille ffectivly give you a bigger foot, and a wider traction area, but as with everything:

pros:
will increase traction off the line

cons:
will increase drag down the line,

you just gotta try trial and error untill u get what works, i dropped mine down to 22-23 psi, but dont drop them down too far otherwise the cars weight will force the tyres off the wheel wall.

and remember to chek ur pressure after each race, as the heat will caus ethe pressure to expand again

It's all personal preferance for what you run tyre pressure wise - i can run anywhere between 18-26 psi on the strip and get roughly the same sort of 60 foot/half track times with a small difference in trap speed - depends on the state of the track cos if it's slippery to start with i get more with higher pressures but if it's nice and sticky i get away a whole lot better with lower pressures!

and if you let too much air out, be careful when you try to turn off the track at the end :D

dont go too low though! youll stuff the side walls, if your running low profiles then prob not a good idea to go much lower then you normally run.
also think of how the tyre foot print acts... the more pressure the more it 'bumps' out in the middle, the less pressure the more the sides will carry the load, what you want it the entire surface in contact withthe road.
but as stated above, trail nd error is the only way to find whats best for your car! but you wanna heaps in non driven wheels.
