High speed Car vibration

Postby DJ » Sat Oct 23, 2004 8:20 pm

When I get over 90kph the steering wheel starts to vibrate badly and the car a little bit also, I though it may be the front wheels may need re-allignment but Ive been told it may be something to do with the enkei alloys on it, little help?

Car is a 91 N/A SW20

I'd say your wheels need to be balanced.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Yeah, get em balanced.

My car did exactly what you described, got them balanced two weeks ago and it has been driving smooth as ever since.

I'm pretty sure its just balancing. I think if alighnment is out it will pull to one side.

I just got my front two wheels balanced as my steering wheel shook like mad on the motorway, is sweet as now.

Yea, alignment is for ensuring that your car goes straight when the steering wheel is straight. Keeps wheels parallel to each other.

Balancing is to keep the rotational inertia in check, making sure that it doesn't make the forces act to the left or the right while rotating.

are they aftermarket enkei wheels, if so it may need hub rings because it being just off, a few mm's can do alot.

Once you get them balanced and aligned you'll probably find that it still pulls to the left a bit, its supposed to that that (a bit, not a lot)

they are plasitc or metal rings that make the wheel sit nicely on the hub, instead of sitting a little off center

not supposed to, it just does from the camber of out $&#$% up roads, unless it has a fully adjustable susspension (caster, camber and toe) it will never drive straight

Has just come up with my car. Got it balanced, but its not that. Next check is the wheel bearings, jack up the car and shake the wheel holding it at the top and bottom. If it's not that the only other thing is can be is the steering, either play in the tie rod or rack end. Mine is the left rack end, go figure last thing on the list and hardest to fix.

Car shake

Postby L8TR » Tue Nov 02, 2004 12:01 am

If you have done every thing and it is still shakey check that your tyres are completely round, jack up the wheel hold a piece of chalk in one spot
and spin it, then measure the thickness allround, should be the same,
I had this once with two brand new tyres and they came out of the mould
egg shaped $300.00 a pop they swapped for replacements, and said it does happen.

has the problem occured since you fitted the rims to the car? had a similar problem with a AE101 where the hub size was to small (or big cant remember) causeing the wheel to sit like this / only not on such an angle
solution was in this case to buy new mags as didnt want spacers
