Got to mod the subbie to keep up with you toyota owners :)

Hey guys ive just brought a 1990 auto gt legacy and im allready getting bored with it and with getting ownd by u 20v's and gt-4's.

Im budgeting on about 5k worth of mods to help it go faster and handle better.

This is what i have planned but im not sure if it is the best idea or value for money.

Front mount intercooler=$1500
3inch zaust =$800
king lowering springs=$400
gas shocks=$600
cold air intake=$300
Boost controller or ecu =$1000

total 5k (ish)

Im not sure which brand of any of the above is best and ive read conflicting reports on various websites about what sort of boost the car can reliably handle. These reports has gone as far as saying 15psi would cause no issues....

This car NEEDS to last me my 4 or 5 years at uni so anything thats going to overly stress the engine is out of the question.

Any help or first hand experience would be great.

p.s I know its not a toyota and saying "burn it to the ground" or " drive it off a cliff" doesnt help much

I'd go ahead with a FMIC, $1500 sounds about right, all plumbed up etc. Get a decent exhaust (should be cheaper than you quoted), make your own cold air box for < $100. Then fiddle with the boost. $1000 for a boost controller? Not for what you're doing. Buy a cheapee off trademe for $50 or less, or do what I did and make one for about $20.

and what vvega has just quoted will be very reliable.

turbo conversion done properly will be just as reliable as the setup you have stocers.

ecu can only help you in a positive way if you tune the car properly as it will run more eficiently.

FMIC and Zorst will by providing allot better flow.

and BOV.....work it out for yourself.

do u think this could be all done and made to run safly and reliably for 5k...i mean what about fuel pumps, injectors and such?

Yes, it can all be easily done for 5K and you wouldn't really need any other mods to support it. You can look at changing the fuel pump and injectors etc when you plan on running higher boost and need more fuel otherwise you don't need to upgrade those.

how much boost should it be running with this setup i mean what is the stock boost level of these cars?

I'm not entirely sure on the stock boost of these cars but I am guessing around the 10-11 psi mark.

What sort of boost you run after everything is done is depending on a couple of different factors. Internal/External wastegate, what the ecu is configured to do, wether you have a boost tap or not, flow of the IC etc etc

Converting twin-turbo early GT's to single turbo nets some good gains dollar wise...

Try driving your car, then an RS, the results speak for themselves.

Spend a few hundred and chip it, even that will give you some extra fun top-end wise...

im kinda leaning towards my first idea ay since it includes money for suspension and would probly be easyer to maintain since it doesnt require a new ecu or turbo etc.... do you have any idea as to how much of a hp gain i could achieve running the setup in my original post on stock boost?


oh and its not a twin turbo... all the pre 93 (new shape) legacys were single turbo :)

well if you just want it to run very reliable and be a gud ride then i suggest just going for the ecu, zorst, intake and mbe intercooler.

spend the rest on suspension so you will hve a better ride.

that way she stays very reliable and you will enjoy driving it.

why should i get an ecu i mean if im not going to play with the boost at all how will it help i mean can u actually get decent power gains from a turbo car by fitting a new ecu without winding up the boost?

From a chip, yes you can get power gains without touching the boost...

Factory computers are very conservative, and there are very decent gains to be made with a decent aftermarket computer. And I would stay away from 'chips' if you can afford a whole new ECU.

in that case ill just rock up to turbo shop and get a link ecu i hear they are pretty decent
