Supercharger oil usage

Postby Andy from the block » Mon Jan 24, 2005 9:17 pm

my supercharger oil seems to drop to nothing very quickly.
even more so after I put in a 175mm pulley kit.

what is likely to cause this and what can I do about it?
is my s/c about to die?

indicates that your seals are stuffed,
it will die if the seals arnt replaced.
im not sure who does seals for them, ive been doing a bit of research for parts to rebuild them, but have had no luck so far

thanx for that.
how well do u think the seal kit would work on a supercharger thats
used oil for a long period of time?
wouldnt the seal kit pretty much just stop further leaks but not
be able to reverse any damage already done to the s/c due to lack
of oil/lubrication for so long? (ie: repair the seals and still get less boost
than normal?)

if thats the case, then wouldnt we be better off doing what Bazda suggests and getting a 2nd hand s/c which never had seal problems?

Not too sure what other damage can be done to the internals , buying second hand is always a risk too , as you never know how long the seals will last you , but it may be a cheaper option , yell with what they are worth at the wreckers as I would be interested too , cheers

remember the oil ONLY lubes the gears.... not the screws... so losing oil shouldnt affect your boost.... except by extra drag from worn gears...

superchargers work to very fine tolerances, you will need to find a place experienced with such things if you want a good job.

as stated above that kit isnt a toyota item, if fact toyota list the screws and gear assembly as one part

Yeah I have lost no boost on my charger , but you can hear the supercharger wind up when the oil is full but nothing once its emptied out.

do u think the gears may get worn/damaged from lack of oil?
basically Im tossing up between 3 options
1) get a 2nd hand supercharger and replace my existing one with it
2) get that seal kit and seal my existing supercharger
3) leave it alone

still havent decided yet...tryn to get more info
(does the sc wear out over time? ie: needs reconditioning or cleaning or something? if so, how easy would it be to do?)

seal kitis not good, trying to take the sc apart is impossible unless u got some special equipment, some how the bearings have to be pressed out and they also have very very close tolerences.

i know a few places that have tried and just gave up and told the customer to buy a 2nd hand one.
I recon thats your best choice andy, they are like $200-300 from toyota glore and a 1 month warranty, so if its crap they will prob replace it or something.

I'm having issues with my supercharger atm. I'm running a 180mm crank pulley, modified water pump, and tensioner. It sounds like the bearings are $&#$% in my supercharger. I've tried 2 other superchargers and 1 other clutch. But no joy with any of them. What is the gear assembly worth from you guys??

$200-$300 for a brand new one?? Doubt it... As I stated earlier I have tried other superchargers, and they all still make the same noise. It doesn't seem to effect my boost tho, I'm still getting 15psi...

I just hate hearing the noise. It fully pisses me off. It's already cost me nearly $800, for two superchargers, plus labour for doing the three seperate conversions of all them.
