Just the superstrut, if it has it. Otherwise they're a good solid Toyota :D

Lack of engine power?
Just kidding, gearbox synchros will be worn on thrashed, higher K's models, check oil to see if it's clean and correct level, same with coolant.
Ask owner for any receipts for things such as cambelts and routine servicing.

Superstrut will look like whats in the pic below.
I'm not sure if you're familiar with conventional McPherson strut but super strut is fairly similar with an extra link and control arm, don't let it put you off though as it does help the car handle very nicely and if you need replacement parts Mr Revhead can do good deals on genuine Toyota replacement parts.

Hey, I made that site - GT Girls car though.

Another thing to look at when buying a 101 FX (and any 20v) is the VVT pulley - if its done over 140kms chances are it needs replacing - you will be able to hear it.

yup the vvt pulley can make some noise... but its best to test it.. a lto off ppl reckon their car has a stuffed pulley when in fact its another noise....
they arent too bad to replace though, certainly not as dear as the blacktop ones.

they wont harm the engine at all, but they can jam in one position and lose power/drivibility

Like a very quick rattly noise at startup if it isnt too rooted, but a constant tappetty kind of noise if its totally stuffed.

I thought the blacktop ones were cheaper - what prices are we talking?

I'd say more like the other way around. Its pretty normal for them to make a slight tapping noise when the engine is warmed up. If it does it on startup it means that the fluid has leaked out of it while sitting and there is no fluid it in until oil pressure builds up - it shouldn't have to rely on oil pressure. If it can't hold the fluid it will rattle more and more.

mine seems to be very annoying @ idle... tick tick tick tick etc

but i gotta reset my tps :D so, it might just be normel and im thinking my vvt is playing up.

pretty sure its working though... pulls hard throughout the entire revrange, no *waiting for power up high* or *good amount of pull down low, no high end* etc.

well, this from a 20v perceptive :P no 3sge boys going *what! torque! a 1.6 has no torque!*
