I think my oil got over filled (double filled)

Postby Lunchie » Wed Mar 02, 2005 6:26 pm

Hey guys my surbaru ( 1990 gt legacy) was in the process of getting a new engine when the guy doing it called me up and told me he thought something wasnt right. I went down and saw him and he told me that there were several things not right with the car.

1. The car had just had an oil change (700kms ago) but the little area around the bolt of the sump looked like it haddnt been touched for atleast 2 months. ( this is strange considering the oil was replaced bout 5 days b4 the engine shatitself

2. The amount of oil that was drained from the sump was about 4.5 liters ( which on its own is fine) ... however on top of that the guy rekens that theres atleast another liter in the engine all through the intercooler, air intake , in take manifolds the whole lot.... and if this wasnt enough he told me that when he unbolted the turbo about 2 liters of oil poored out of the exhaust.

3. The colour of the oil is completly black...... and ive seen this for myself .... no nice golden brown just totally black. ( certainly not what it should look like after just a few 100 kms).

Im getting the block pulled apart in the next few days to see what ( if any damage has been done)

What im wanting to know is if the new oil had been poored straight over the old stuff eg like 9 liters instead of 4.5 what sort of damage could have been done to the likes of piston rings etc.....

Regardless of wheather there is any damage im going to have the company up that did the change but if its likly that the over filled oil could have damaged pistons etc through hydrolicing then i may have to take the matter further.
"The air is heavy with antisipation as cozmo revs, drops the clutch and...... stalls with the hand brake on"........ "cozmo's hand brake one, cozmo 0"

I doubt it would have lasted 5 days with 9 litres of oil, you would have noticed A LOT of smoke pretty quickly...but I could be wrong...

Doubeling the oil... you would have heard it as soon as you started the engine, slap slap slap...

I dont think it would have lasted 5 days also ^_^

I'd be less concerned about whether the engine has been overfilled with oil and more concerned about oil being in places that it shouldn't be - air intake, intake manifolds :?

How did he decide there was 'a litre' of oil residue in the intake piping, intercooler etc? Sounds like this person isn't being very factual, as the statement that once he took the turbo off 2L of oil poored out the exhaust - sounds like nonsense....

Theres no where for the turbo to 'store' that amount of oil, nor is there any way that it could be collecting where it joins the exhaust. From this I would suggest you be weary of every subsequent comment this person makes.

I would say that colour is not actually a very good indication of age or quality of oil... certain sythetics I've used in the past would change to black after only a couple of 100 km.

wildcard is very correct
2 litres of oil in your exhaust would have made a smokescreen that james bond himself would have been proud of

oil turn black as soon as it has been exsposed to high heat
if it was in your exhaust
well that says it all
sounds like you have blown your turbo seals that would have simalar symptoms to what your saying
then you went in and got a oil change and they just toopped it up....
kinda hard top give a real diagnosus without seeing the car in parts for myself ....

Hahaha nice :D

I'd have to agree here. The 'eye' measuring device is usually one that is poorly calibrated and is known to exaggerate.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

you sure the person who did the last change didnt do the age old cock up of draining the oild from the gearbox not the sump then put in too much which would create some serious problems.....

was your gearbox crunchy at all lately

even if its auto, lack of gearbox fluid cause major problems - i know of a hilux with f**ked auto trans clutches for that very reason

an auto without fluid wouldnt even work.

youd put it into drive, the output side of the torque converter would spin, without fluid to drive the input to the bands, there wouldnt be any movement.

just revving... and maybe some odd sounds...

dont go subie, unless your going sti :).

Sorry mate, but coz is right. An auto box cannot operate without fluid. LOL reminds me of my mate who's dad did an oil change for him. Finished doing it and wondered why his car wouldn't go into drive...He had drained the gbox fluid and doubled up the oil. Thankfully didn't cause any problems.

Being that you've done 'work experience', I'm going to assume you have some mechanical know how. I would have thought you'd have some idea of how an auto box works, but obviously not.

An auto box simply will not function without fluid.

Do have the knowledge - but despite the theory what happens in reality can be slightly different

Well, if you have some idea of how it works, answer me this: How are your gears selected if there's no fluid in the box?
