4age or 22r-e?

Postby crshbndct » Thu Mar 24, 2005 1:55 pm

i have a 1973 corona.

the motor in it is a 12r, 1587cc 90hp, with about 140nm torque.
obviously i want to go faster.

i have 2 options
1: 4age:I4 DOHC 16v 1587cc, 130hp/150nm.
pros: aftermarket
weight
economy
cons: cost and availability of rwd gearboxes/rwd intake manifolds
lack of torque (which is important to me as i used to drive a v8).
difficulty of installation.

2: 22r-e:I4 SOHC 8v 2236cc, 125hp/198nm.
pros: cost
availability of parts
ease of installation (comes from the same motor series, hence uses same mounts/crossmembers.) also will not need any manipulation of transmission tunnel to fit gear box.
torque
2.4l producing 125hp means lots of scope for gaining additional power
cons: weight
economy(which should still be good with the correct diff ratio)

i really like the idea of the 22r, it will be a far easier installtion, look standard, and it is different to your average 4age. also, the 22r is good for turbo charging so i have been told.

Another better option is the 18R-GEU.

This is a Two Litre Twin Cam 8 valve.

It puts out more power than the 4A-GEU, and more torque.

This will be more suited to the heavier car. Why not? It's a bargin!

if a 16v 4age will fit, why not a turbo blacktop >D

makes quite a bit more puff than an 18r-geu

18RGEU would be a lot cheaper to get in there, they are old motors though so finding a decent one could be difficult. there are 2nd hand HKS turbo kits that you see around every now and then too if you want to get serious with it later on.

as for the 4AGE i agree, i'm put off because of the popularity of these driving the rwd gearboxes and bellhousings up to some stupid prices. if you did want to get serious though there are aftermarket bellhousings available to suit W5* gearboxes, about 6-700 from memory which is pretty expensive (to me) but gets you away from the hunt for a decent T50 and into a much stronger gearbox.

rwd intake manifolds are pretty easy to fabricate (shouldn't be too expensive to get a fwd cut and welded if you don't know someone who can do it), i wouldn't let that put you off.

as for 22R's i've never seen one, i don't think they're very common over here???

cheers

the main con against the r series motors i could forsee is age

age leads to all sorts of funny issues with sourcing some parts etc

the 4age being slightly more modern and alot more prolific is a lot easier to source parts for but as you have already said some parts eg rwd g'b are rediculously over valued at current

up to you man.. what ever floats your boat sounds like a mean idea

just to throw the idea at ya havent thought of a lexus quadcam 8 have ya?

they are reasonably priced and will have sufficient grunt to move ya car plus have fun while your at it

cheers

18R's use a W series gearbox standard so very strong and easy to get.

Early use W40'and W50's, later 18RGEU's run a W55 box.

Theres not much stopping you going the R way really. I think that they still make R motors for the hilux? At least well into the late 90's
I have a R motor to W gearbox bellhousing (W55, W57, etc.) you can have for $50.

Do some homework on this motor... turbo 2.4L motor. It could be that it was only sold in the USA. Do some searching anyway. 6psi boost, 7.5 compression.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

yup usa/canada market rn5# and 6# 4-runner

the 4age would prob be the easier one to do... but as you say the box problem becomes a factor.

you state you want torque, so that mean you dont want a 8000rpm revver?

22r it is for then i think!

22r was avail in hilux uptill late 99.
